On Stoaty/Ace’s point, I have mixed feelings. On one hand I’ve long suspected the same thing: that the idea of being remembered for decades as an Evil Monster is the main attraction for the sort of people who do things like this, and we shouldn’t feed their sad fantasies. On the other, I really don’t know how to describe somebody who would do something like this as anything other than an evil monster.

The chief advised him that, yes, they were going to kill him, if he didn’t give up the info. He would be held down and run over by a truck. The local papers would be notified of his death as an accident in which the victim was backed over by a trash truck. Hardly a hero’s death for a man of his stature and reputation. He blabbed.

In the case of these types of murders the murderer, if captured alive they should be given a short trial and if found guilty handed over to the shrinks for a couple of weeks of study. Then they should be taken out and executed and buried in an unmarked grave. No publicity, no reporting, no coverage at all except to note that they have been executed. Let them become just a footnote in history and have as short a possible google entry. Even if it causes only a few of these crazies to eat a bullet alone rather than gun down some innocents it will be worth the ACLU challenges.

If black-on-black handgun homicide is stripped out of the mix, then rates in the US are broadly comparable to other countries and lower than many.
