Bleak

I was going to soldier on and post something in my usual vein, but that felt all kinds of wrong.

So. Shut up it is, then.

One thought. Ace is on about something that I’ve been saying for years: if you want less of this kind of thing, watch your language (I’m looking at you, media). Stop describing these shooters as evil and monsters. They love that shit. This is exactly what the mass-murderer wanted, and what his imitators want. To be a huge scary monster. To be a horrible, shocking beast.

Not a loser. Not somebody who couldn’t make friends or get a good job or keep a girl. Honest to god, these guys think what they do makes them rockstars. The dead kids are just props on his stage.

I guarantee you, there are people sitting home tonight watching the news and thinking, “yes. I want some of that. That’s just how I want to go out.”

If it bleeds, it leads. That is all these bastages know and value.

I doubt if media or gov’t (it is getting harder to tell them apart) have any interest in lessening the casualty count.

Other than these 2 points, i concur with Her Stoatness.

Oh, it’s not tolerance, Pat. It’s limitation. It’s generally not a good idea to get into a pissing contest with a troll; the methods at my disposal to block him are pathetically weak. For that reason, if he keeps a reasonably civil tongue in his head, I let his posts stand.

A very Catholic friend posted this on FB this evening:

1. There is no god
2. The same entity we pray/thank that our children did not die today is the same entity that took someone else’s child away
3. There is no plan
4. There is only chaos, random fate and the madness of humanity
5. Our country will continue to produce random (mostly male) nut jobs, who will find whatever guns they need and whatever unprotected place they choose full of innocent people to slaughter for some unfathomable reason
6. And nothing can/will be done about it
7. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

I might only add that it not just guns, but bombs and knives and arson also, but makes no difference.

It’s the sanest thing I’ve read today.

@Gromulin,
if I can quote Sam Langhorne Clemens from memory, his list looked somewhat similar to this one:

1) there is a God
2) He/she made his/hers will known
3) He/she selected me to communicate it to you
4) We will now pass the collection plate
5) Those of you who fail to subscribe will surely be damned.

That’s awful about the CT deal and I cannot bring myself to read about it. Yet I am certain that somewhere another loser is already laying plans on how to outperform.

I had no idea that Dame Stoat experiences boredom. Very unweasel-like, that.

Evil has always walked among us, and always will. History has shown us that we have no choice but to fight it, and keep fighting it. However bad things seem, they can get worse. We must believe that the world really is becoming a better place although it’s hard to see it and harder to prove it on any given day.

It is our fate and our duty, even as horrible things like this happen, to continue slouching towards Jerusalem as best we can.

“A masterpiece, from the Onion, of all places. Pretty much sums up my entire take on this atrocity.”

It starts out pretty good, then ends up exactly like you would expect from The Onion.

On Stoaty/Ace’s point, I have mixed feelings. On one hand I’ve long suspected the same thing: that the idea of being remembered for decades as an Evil Monster is the main attraction for the sort of people who do things like this, and we shouldn’t feed their sad fantasies. On the other, I really don’t know how to describe somebody who would do something like this as anything other than an evil monster.

He’s not the mean and stupid God you make Him out to be”.

Re: notoriety…
I seem to remember a tale of an innovative police chief in Saigon many moons ago. They’d captured a local VC leader and he refused to talk, even with a gun to his head, knowing they had no problem shooting him. The chief advised him that, yes, they were going to kill him, if he didn’t give up the info. He would be held down and run over by a truck. The local papers would be notified of his death as an accident in which the victim was backed over by a trash truck. Hardly a hero’s death for a man of his stature and reputation. He blabbed.

In the case of these types of murders the murderer, if captured alive they should be given a short trial and if found guilty handed over to the shrinks for a couple of weeks of study. Then they should be taken out and executed and buried in an unmarked grave. No publicity, no reporting, no coverage at all except to note that they have been executed. Let them become just a footnote in history and have as short a possible google entry. Even if it causes only a few of these crazies to eat a bullet alone rather than gun down some innocents it will be worth the ACLU challenges.

It’s been pointed out, but bears repeating, that the worst school massacre in US history wasn’t carried out by disaffected teens with heads full of gangsta rap and violent video games, or a socially-inept Asperger’s fruitcake, but by a school board official with a stash of high explosives. And it was in 1927.

The Left are in full-on shroud-waving mode at the moment, as usual. Never miss the chance to exploit a tragedy. This sort of thing is grist to their mill. There aren’t really any ‘lessons’ to be drawn from this, at least any others than the old familiar ones that there is evil in the world, that random, horrible things happen for no good reason to innocent people, and that there will always be a tension between freedom and safety. Pre-emptively locking up everyone who is a bit weird would be a catastrophic injustice; banning certain sorts of guns or even guns in general won’t work; it’s nearly impossible to get past sentiment and emotion to derive hard, statistics-led policy. Mass shootings are declining in frequency. The US is less violent than it was ten and twenty years ago, and less violent than most so-called ‘enlightened’ European countries (e.g. Finland and Luxembourg, and a fortiori the UK, which is by some measures the most violent developed nation in the world.) If black-on-black handgun homicide is stripped out of the mix, then rates in the US are broadly comparable to other countries and lower than many. For pointing this out I’ve already been accused of being heartless and lacking in compassion. But hard cases make bad law, and laws passed in the aftermath of tragedies have an almost perfect track-record of being ill thought-out, ineffective, overbearing and counter-productive.

Comment from Wolfus Aurelius
Time: December 17, 2012, 4:17 pm

I haven’t read anything about the CT school shooting. But from other such stories, like the Aurora shooter, it seems obvious to me. Had there been ONE teacher with a CCW, just one, perhaps a former Marine, our death toll would be approximately 3: Loser’s Mom, one student — the one which would have alerted our Marine — and Loser himself. Much better than 27, no?

Once upon a time in America, our Marine would have been lauded as a hero, and no attention would have been paid to Loser beyond the necessary burying in an unmarked grave. But in a country where people who should be emptying wastebaskets and shining shoes are in charge of “security,” it’s obvious the Bizarros have taken over.

Would now be a good time to remind those on the left that our current government is responsible for getting hundreds of illegal guns to criminals and drug lords who (to date) have killed hundreds of people with them?

If they respond at all to that, just say “when guns are illegal only criminals with government connections will have guns”. Then walk away; the conversation will be over anyhow.
