Royalty, then and now

Not trying to make any profound point here, I just happened to see these two pictures within the hour.

The bottom shows our lords and masters at the G8 summit today, looking every inch the shabby mediocrities we know them to be.

The top shows nine inbred show ponies gathered for the funeral of Edward VII in 1910. Standing, King Haakon VII of Norway, King Ferdinand of Bulgaria, King Manoel of Portugal, Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany, King George I of Greece, King Albert of the Belgians. Seated: King Alfonso XIII of Spain, King George V, King Frederik VIII of Denmark. They probably share more genetic material than Stepford wives.

Not sure I have a preference. On the one hand, if you’re going to lord it over me, it helps if you treat me to a little theater. Shiny boots, awesome whiskers. On the other hand, no. No, I want to take each of these swaggering hams by the back of the neck and slam his or her face repeatedly into a giant pile of mashed potatoes while chanting You. Are. Not. Special.

Whoo-pah! I think I might be a republican.

That Obama feller should be legally required to wear tight jeans & a mesh football shirt.

David Brooks should be required to cower in front of him wearing a dog coller & an abused expression.

I will say this. The worthless inbred ones had one thing over the collection of collectivist, authoritarian, Chekisti-wanna be’s in the lower picture.

At least there was a tradition, occasionally honored, of royalty following up on the concept of noblesse oblige and actually sometimes caring for the welfare of those they ruled, and having some loyalty to them.

Sheesh!
I haven’t seen so many cheap suits since the
last IEEE convention. Looks like they had
their photo op catered by
Gentleman’s Wearhouse.

A constitutional monarchy might be good enough.
The test being can they say “off with their
heads” and mean it or not.

Clearly our leaders need more facial hair and more large medals.

And swords, Tim. Don’t forget the swords. Plastic ones, of course, because the clumsy bastards would slice off their own ears, and God protect the innocent bystanders.

I still can’t get over how little Putin is. Merkel looks like she could kick his ass.

I think our leaders should have better genes than this bunch. Like those guys from 100 years ago. Our bunch looks so wimpy.

At first I was sure our photoshopper had stretched them or something. Nope, thats how they look. Tiny little men, flabby old german ladies, creepy gang banger types, tired old white men.

My neighbors look healthier. I look healthier. I think I could kick Putin’s ass or at least make it close. We really are in trouble, aren’t we? We are led by genetic defects.

I figured it out. Look at the guys from 100 years ago. No way could you go up to any one of them and say “up yours poofter”. They all look like they would bite your head off.

Now look at our bunch. Would anyone be afraid of telling Merkel shes an old granny? Or telling tiny little Putin to F Off? I think that guy next to Obama would cry if you yelled at him. The asian dude looks high. And the guy on the far left? He’s already loaded his pants just getting photographed.

No wonder its all going to hell.

Is there suddenly a *thing* among world leaders, to wear suits but not ties? They look sloppy, especially compared to the 1910 bunch.

True blue ‘Merkin that I am, I do actually approve a hereditary House of Lords. Why? Because it adds a dollop of randomness to the selection.

And I’m not sure I favor an elected Senate. Or the current way we nominate presidents.

The way things are now, all of our ‘leaders’ are chosen for one thing: the ability to win elections. That means giving vapid speeches in front of millions, looking good in a suit and, more often than not, lying your ass off. Power always attracts sociopaths, but our current system seems to attract nothing but.

S. Weasel, remember that America is not what She used to be. Citizens once had to own property and pay taxes to qualify to vote. The Senators were appointed by each state’s legislature, making them answerable to the state government. Now it’s citizenship, shmitizenship — everybody votes: the dead, non-citizens, and the really involved can vote as many times as they like. The Republic is no more.

@scubafreak…yeah, did anyone pick him? One wonders if he would have survived had he been in the US. Italy has really sketchy ER/trauma response/care.

Author Vince Flynn succumbed to prostrate cancer yesterday too. Another pro-American/military, conservative voice that will be sorely missed. If you haven’t read his books, get ’em, they’re a terrific read and exciting as audiobooks.

Regarding the attire choice for G8… you’ve GOT to figure that they did a conference call a week or so prior, and had a long discussion about what to wear.

“I don’t care, Vladimir – I’m wearing a sport jacket, but no tie.” And the no-ties won out. (After all, they don’t want to appear all snooty and aristocratic in front of the commoners.)

Personally, I’d like to see ’em agree to all wear a chest full of “fruit salad” medals and such, at their next get-together photo-op. Maybe on the beauty-queen-style sashes.

When I first looked at that picture (before I read the L to R of the “inbread show ponies”), I mistook George V for Czar Nicholas II. But those two were very close cousins, anyway, so I guess it was an honest mistake.

How many of those show ponies were out on their well-manicured ears by a decade later?

Three: Kaiser Willy, of course; Ferdinand of Bulgaria, a WW I loser who abdicated in favor of his son; and Manoel II of Portugal, dumped just four months after the photo.

Of the rest:

Frederik VIII of Denmark died in 1912 on a park bench in Hamburg (he was 67, and had gone out for a stroll).

George I of Greece was murdered by a random Socialist wino in 1913.

Alfonso XIII of Spain was deposed in 1931, but the monarchy was restored in 1975.

Albert of Belgium fell off a mountain he was climbing in 1934.

George V of Britain died in 1935.

Haakon VII of Norway died in 1957.

As for shared DNA: Haakon, Frederick, George V, and George I were related through the Danish royal house; Albert, George I, Wilhelm, Ferdinand, and Manoel were related through Saxe-Coburg; Alfonso and Manoel were related through the Spanish and Neapolitan Bourbons and the Hapsburgs.
