Don’t rub it in

Somebody sent me this. It comes from our popular classical station, Classic FM, via a Tumblr called Music Theory. I think I have all that right. I like to attribute where I can.

Those are Polands. I have whined before about how much I want one. I got some ‘fertile’ eggs that weren’t this Spring, supposedly including at least one Poland.

Note, at right, they have a knob on their skulls that those stupid feathers sprout out of. So even when they’re tiny fluffy chicks, they have ridiculous hairdos.

The roosters grow up to look like potted ferns and the hens have fluffy afros. I know owners who have to trim around their eyes or tie their headfeathers into hipster buns so the poor birds can see to walk around.

Oops! I hit premature PUBLISH. Well, that’s all there is to say about that, I guess.

Hold on a tick –
Is this one of those Daily Mail challenges to find the duck-billed platypus?

He’s right there in the B diagram! Hiding behind the Spectacular bone and slightly above the Interorbital Septic system!

Wolfgang is too cute. Looks like Big Bird would have looked as a chick.

Stoaty? Did you ever work with gold leaf? I need to refinish an Art Nouveau ring box (circa 1900) because the gold-painted finish has worn off. I thought I’d use gold-leaf but now I have cold feet. It doesn’t seem complicated, but I don’t want to botch the job, or waste the supplies. Any thoughts?

Yes, I’ve used both real and fake gold leaf, Deborah HH. If you want a ‘distressed’ look, it’s idiot-proof. If you want something smooth and shiny that looks like solid gold…err…I never managed that.

The fake is easier to work with because it’s thicker (and cheaper!). The biggest problem is the stuff blowing around on your breath and sticking to your fingers with static electricity.

‘Ole PJ had a tale about going to a cockfight an putting a couple bucks on a rooster that looked just like David Lee Roth.

Thank you Stoaty. I had considered using the liquid gold, but one of the comments I read said that it dried quickly and you had to work fast—and I don’t do anything fast. But knowing that my very breath can float the fragile gold leaf is good to know. I could wear a mask or tie on a bandana. This info is very helpful, and thank you so much. I am encouraged 🙂

Beware: more than one link in a comment is apt to earn you a trip to the spam filter, where you will remain -- cold, frightened and alone -- until I remember to clean the trap. But, hey, without Akismet, we'd be up to our asses in...well, ass porn, mostly.
