Horse girls

These little girls were amazing. They were little, too – all twelve year olds. Doing some sort of pony relay race in teams of four. I’m sure the horsey among us will tell me what that’s called.

The course was a sort of figure 8. There were low jumps, and then a place where they had to slow their horses to a walk, then hell for leather down the last two jumps and pass the baton.

They were incredibly poised. The two youngest ponies acted up. One ran up to the jump and noped out a couple of times. One indulged a little bucking and rearing. Both girls got their mounts under control and finished the race.

Why is it always girls and horses? I wasn’t a horsey little girl, but I knew plenty. Why is it never little boys and horses?

I should say, our local team placed first and second.

Little boys prefer motorcycles, dirt bikes, go carts and stuff that goes fast 🙂

Stoaty, I don’t believe it was always girls and horses. Decorum prevents me from saying anything more than to observe that there didn’t seem to be the same degree of fascination when girls and women rode side-saddle.

Plus I’m allergic to them…they make me sneeze uncontrollably.

I’ve been riding since I was 12. Ummm, horses and girls, it seems sort of obvious to me.

Two of God’s most beautiful creatures.

Girls and horses: always has been. Look at the cover of J.P. Mallory’s In Search of the Indo-Europeans, for a Parthian Shot.

I think galloping low full tilt across a field or down a dirt road on a sunny day with the wind wiping in your face is about as close to pure freedom as you can get.

I envy the bond between horse and rider in those moments.
I think girls get to do more with horses because somehow our society expected it, as if it wasn’t what a boy should be spending his free time on while it was okay for a girl to have such “leisure” time.
Perhaps because we think men should be using horses for work and not for leisure.

People who think keeping horses is “leisure” don’t know much.

I’m sure old Sigmund F. had an opinion on this. Because sometimes a horse is more than just a cigar.

I touched a horse once. Once. They are not part of my world.

They’re practice for men: giving orders to big, smelly creatures who are just smart enough to understand those orders.
