Happy solstice!
I know what you’re thinking – the Winter Solstice is the 21st. Well, I got all sorts of results from a search, but most agreed it falls on the 22nd in our neck of the woods this year. Stonehenge was covered in the usual LARPing hippies.
Solstice is important to me because chickens. My life revolves around moving chickens – mostly roosters – into and out of chicken runs. On the shortest day (ahem, today) the last chicken voluntarily goes in at around 3:30 and on the longest day it’s more like 9:30. What happens in between is similarly compressed or expanded.
Tomorrow, we pick up the turkey (it was an eye watering £75 this year) and a few other bits and pieces, and then we’re done. See you on the other side!

I have also seen search results that claim the winter solstice is the 22nd. I have been logging sunrise and sunset times for months and am desperate to see the days grow longer. This is the season of dark, grim, gray, cloudy skies – day after day. Even this last summer was gray, cold, and dark.

Our Honeybaked ham was $115 this year! It was $70 something last year and I was unhappy about that. It’s a good thing I wasn’t with the husband when he picked it up or I likely would have told them to stuff it. I wouldn’t have felt bad being short with them either. The staff has gotten as absurdly sullen and rude as the prices have become absurdly high.
I remember when I was a kid in the 80s it seemed like a great indulgence to spend nearly $30(!) on a Honeybaked ham. At least back then the staff were cheerful middle aged ladies. Not nasty 20 somethings who act like they are doing you a favor by taking your money.
Looks like going forward I’m going to have to learn how to bake a ham in my doddering middle age. I’ve always just bought a Honeybaked whenever we had ham. Anybody have a good recipe? Merry Christmas

May we all put aside worries about food costs and all have a blessed and joyous Christmas.
And failing that, may you have whatever kind of Christmas you wanted.
(One of my big gifts arrived today, the 22nd. Days start getting longer now! Hurrah!)

Merry Christmas to Badger House, and all who dwell within. And to all of Stoaty and Uncle Badger’s friends, family, and readers.
P.S. You have an oven large enough for a 60 pound turkey 😉

Merry Christmas pretend internet friends!
I just carved up a 10 lb ham, $45 american. It is not Honeybaked but a spiral sliced store brand, pretty good but yeah that must have been Some Pig. Ham and Bean soup tomorrow and sandwiches until the mustard gives out.

Guess who’s up early, early on Christmas morning? It’s 6am here – another year when the traps didn’t catch Santa! Merry Christmas to you all. Now, about that Christmas cake…

Merry Christmas to all!
My Santa trap didn’t work either, so I had to drink it all myself!
PRO TIP: If you find you didn’t put enough rum in the Christmas Cake, you can still add rum by the glass at the time of consumption!
