I’ve been invited to make a rake

I’ve been invited to join a two-day rake making workshop in Wales. The number of times I get an email like that and think, “that’s a weird spam” and then realize, “oh, wait – I signed on for that shit!”

Well, no, not rake making. I signed onto a website that is all about scythes, back during my brief flirtation with scything. This is the first mailing I’ve had from them in years, so it took me a minute to place them.

People who spend two days and £160 making a rake that you can buy from the same site for £42.50 are will be a type. Wealthy, retired to the country, LARPing as peasants.

You know what? It would probably be a lot of fun.

But Stoaty—think of the postings you could get out of two days in Wales, not counting learning how to make a rake (which seems a lot safer than making a scythe). And then there’s the language, and the road signs, and the dinner menu. Don’t you know a teenager who’d come feed and water your darlings for a few days, so you and Uncle Badger can go larking about?

I’m not wealthy, but I’d be sorely tempted to join in.
Made of ash, huh? Same stuff as my cane which has served me for many years.
If they don’t ship to Isle of Man I’m guessing they don’t ship to Georgia, USA. Darn. Would’ve been a great gift for some FertKin.

You should do it!

Might be useful to learn to rake ze bugs once we all go back to the peasant class!

Hey, peasant class…I suppose they won’t teach us that, we’ll have to learn the hard way.

@Deborah HH – hope the wild fires are not anywhere near y’all!

@DurnedYankee. Thank you for your concern. JavaMan and I live well south of the trouble, but the fires have swept over places where we formerly lived in Carson, Gray, and Wheeler counties. The burned acreage is now over one million acres, which sets a new record. The fires have now burned ENE into Oklahoma, but I don’t know how bad the damage is over there.

My nephew is a firefighter, and is back on the line today after 24 hrs off. His home is too close to a new fire that started last night, near Boys Ranch, so we are keeping watch. It is lightly snowing today, but we are all praying for a blizzard.

Drudge Report is linking out to fire news

At worst you’d make an ash of yourself.

If Jeremy Clarkson attends, that surely will be an entertaining time!

I’d pay 60 pounds plus shipping for a Stoaty rake.

(yeah. I'm going to write)

(oooo! you have a website?)

Beware: more than one link in a comment is apt to earn you a trip to the spam filter, where you will remain -- cold, frightened and alone -- until I remember to clean the trap. But, hey, without Akismet, we'd be up to our asses in...well, ass porn, mostly.
