Am I about to spend a buttload of money for this one game…?

Three games came out on the same day this week, two were super woke and bombed spectacularly right out of the gate, and then there’s this new astonishing-looking game out of China that has already sold 10 million copies.

I know most of you don’t play games, so I won’t go on about the first two, although it’s pretty fun to watch someone else play Dustborn. Billed by its creators as the wokest game ever. If you can’t get enough of weak white men, sassy black women and fats, here’s seventeen hours of gameplay. You go, girl!

The Chinese game, though, is stunning. It’s based on the 16th Century Chinese Novel Journey to the West and apparently it’s nothing but a love letter to the source material. Watch the trailer for a taste.

I know, I know…the Chicoms. But game.

They released a free demo so you could test your computer’s ability to run the game. Mine passed the test just fine even though it’s five years old.

And then some bright spark got the idea to try the benchmark with that VR plugin – it only works with games that are built with this one engine, and Wukong qualifies. And it works! It works! On my computer, if I turn the graphics all the way down to crayon, it runs.

Like ass.

I have a sneaking feeling a new graphics card is in my future. Do you know what they cost these days? Oof!

It’s the start of a long weekend. Then there isn’t another three-day weekend in Britain until Christmas. Don’t worry – I make Uncle B celebrate Thanksgiving. I don’t have to push too hard. You have a good one!

I’m not a big boss-fight fan, and boss fights seem to be the main attraction in Wukong; however, it does look like a very well done game for those who like that style. Good luck with getting a card, and enjoy!

The screenshot makes it look like the classic Dr. Who episode Warrior’s Gate.

I hate boss fights and that did give me pause, but I am allllll about the graphics. I should have updated my video card anyway. I don’t suppose anyone has advice?

I guess it’s a “tell” that I’m not a gamer when I admit that I had to look up what “boss fight” means.

My idea of a terrific computer game is still Jellyfish Backgammon, copyright 1994-1998. (I’m amazed and delighted it still runs on my Win11 machine.)

I don’t know from graphics cards, but Pixy at AoSHQ always posts links to Tom’s Hardware which does reviews.

Texas just installed a 90 foot statue to the Hindu diety Hanuman companion of the god Rama.
Okay , not Texas, but people who live n Texas….

Which means Hanuman is about 30 foot taller than Sam Houston’s statue on I-45 in Huntsville.
Actually Hanuman is officially the 3rd tallest statue in the US.

Hanuman murti, is also known as the monkey god, which is, if I remember rightly, the “guy” taking the journey to the west.

I guess he got here after all this time.

This ain’t your grandad’s Texas no more.

I bought it. It starts with a thirty-minute boss fight as an intro. Fortunately for me, it ran really flaky, taking multiple tries to start even in Compatibility mode. Then wouldn’t restart. All this on a machine that (barely) meets their suggested specs. My old hands can’t take the gameplay pressure, and I’m too old to fight with a game to get it to run properly. Refunded.

Epic has Callisto Protocol for free right now; got it and it runs just fine TYVM. Turns out it’s a decent game if you do horror. Also it actually runs! Win all araound.

I’ve watched a streamer playing it, and it has some frustration factor (have you played a Dark Souls?) but the game looks really good. There do seem to be lots of options for gameplay from the equipment too.

I’ve seen a lot of debate whether this is a Souls-like, and the consensus seems to be it’s not. I have avoided the Souls games because I am past the age I can get gud. They look purty, but I don’t have the skills. Frustrating boss fights make me angry, and angry isn’t why I play games.

And I do hate boss fights, but I also hate the little-guy-bigger-guy-bigger-guy-BOSS pattern that all games have conformed to since…Doom, I guess. I don’t in principle object to a game that breaks out of that dreary pattern.
