They never came back…

Beg pardon. Didn’t mean to leave you with a mystery yesterday.

The lady who was ambushed does more for the club than all the rest of us put together. She works it like a full time job. She needs the money she gets from selling artwork, but that can’t explain it. Absolutely nobody else would go at it this hard.

However, she does it while firehosing the rest of us with long, rambling emails. The other ladies wake up to a bulging inbox every morning and panic. We’ve lost committee members over it and are in danger of losing more. And she’s a bit of a loose cannon.

It’s a dilemma. I guarantee you, if they push her out, they won’t find volunteers to take over the work she does.

Which brings me to a question. Scheduling volunteers is my least favorite part of my current gig (see above snapshot of my Google calendar). After lockdown the volunteers didn’t come back.

Everyone’s complaining. The National Trust. The National Council of Voluntary Organisations. The Scouts.

I mean, some of them died. You have to hand it to those people. But an awful lot of people got a taste of idleness and decided they like it.

Same in the States?

I am retired, therefore fashionably idle.

I do cook a couple times a day, least a house husband can do, and it’s real cooking.
In fact just today had some chicken thighs that wanted cooking so they turned into Creamy Garlic Mushroom chicken thighs served over properly cooked spaghetti.
Last night it was Tortellini Soup with chicken apple sausage.

Good thing I like cooking and good thing the other denizens of Casa De Durned will eat it.

Volunteer? Did that when I had less time to do it.
Now I’m sure prehistoric boomer man with a surly attitude probably wouldn’t be a welcome addition to the staff of the Enlightened unless they taped my mouth shut.

He is quite fortunate that he did not initially say “snausages.”

There are two sets of volunteers in the US who did not come back after COVID.
1) Those who got so scared of the KungFlu that they never want to leave their nest again. Many of them are forever mask wearers now.
2) Regular people who got told they were terrible for doing regular things, and decided they were done with giving people the benefit of the doubt. They’ll give money (but not time) to charity organizations that *didn’t* give into the State, but those are so few as to be nonexistent.

Surely your Muslim invaders can pick up the slack. After all, they are willing to do the jobs that Whites will not do!

The only place I volunteer myself, and the only place I’ve got any reason to pay attention to, has been a little off on volunteers but not too bad. I think it has to do with the fact that it is an old line church. In fact, they don’t come any older-liner than Orthodox Christian. Many of our parishioner volunteers are little old Eastern European ladies whose lives in large part revolve around Church life.

I’m part of the baking crew. We make several kinds of bread, and yummy big nut rolls, apricot rolls, and poppy seed rolls. I’m told it’s pretty funny to look in on the work crew made up of little old 5-foot ladies plus me, a six-foot man weighing in at around 265 lbs (19 stone), all of us wearing hair nets.

So what, exactly, does the steering committee of an art club, you know…do?

We have monthly talks or demos throughout the winter, then hold an exhibition in the summer. The exhibition takes quite a lot of prepping.
