Yay! I get to use this graphic again!

Ah, I thought I’d never get to run with this illo again.

Arlen Specter. ‘Member him? Defected from the Republican Party in time to be the 60th yea vote on Obamacare.

Duplicitous rat bastard has a new book out, was shocked that the Democrats reneged on all the goodies they promised. Wouldn’t campaign for him. Didn’t let him keep his seniority (and hence snag a plum chairmanship).

Specter believes Reid acted with “duplicity” while managing the party switch. Specter said Reid promised him that he would be recognized on the seniority list as a Democrat elected in 1980, but failed to deliver on it.

Had Specter been given the seniority he was promised, he would have become chairman of the powerful Labor, Health and Human Services Appropriations subcommittee and next in line to chair the Judiciary Committee.

Instead, Reid stripped Specter of all his seniority by passing a short resolution by unanimous consent in a nearly-empty chamber, burying him at the bottom of the Democrats’ seniority list.

Specter found out about it after his press secretary emailed him a press account of the switch. Specter was floored that Reid had “violated a fundamental Senate practice to give personal notice to a senator directly affected by the substance of a unanimous consent agreement.”

The fairytale ending? Specter didn’t even make it through the primary next go-round, when Democrats decided they’d rather vote for an actual Democrat, thanks very much.

Ye gods, our lords and masters are stupid people.

I proudly switched Parties to vote against him in the Primary in 2010. It’s good to see scum offended by the scummy actions perpetrated by other scum for once. May he continue to rot in retirement.

I am not debating the scurrilous sabotage of the country and groveling before the foreign hook-nose octopus that suffocates the highest levels of US government.

That said, at least the powers are not hereditary (with exception of Bushes and Kennedys). You’ve picked a strange place to flee to, Dame Stoat, to escape the stupidity of lords and masters. Were you lured in by higher taxation?

There’s a part of me that thinks making one house of government hereditary is a good thing. The way the House of Lords used to be, and isn’t really so much any more.

Oh, not because I think some people are born special. But because it kind of introduced a wild card. You know, something other than a career politician seeking office, in the distasteful way they do.

My real preference would be for one house to be picked by lottery, the way juries are.

A democracy where there are two competitive parties requires the politicians to pay attention and be competent and stay out of trouble.

The I’m Ok/You’re Ok wings we had with the 95+ percent retention is worse than a Lord that at least would care about the next generation to some extent, instead of making a killing right now with corruption.

It is interesting to note that the only place where the traditional family of the last few centuries survives is in the upper middle class. The lower classes are reverting to the condition they were in before the Church organized them into work units around the turn of the last milenium. As the machine age ends the usefulness they had as farm or factory workers is also ending. They used to wander around the forests of Europe, the deserts of Arabia, and the jungles of Africa. Now they wander around the cities….

Dammit you distracted me from my original post. Troll scores!

I have had a distaste for Arlen Spincter for years. I have a clear memory of Hugh Hewitt (a right-wing radio pundit) arguing that dirty and smelly as Arlen was, PA Republicans should support him because of his place on the Judicary Committee. Needed him for the supreme court you see.

Arlen gets no sympathy from me. I will someday make a trip to Pennsylvania to piss plant daisys on his grave

The problem with treason is that the people you defect to can’t trust you, either. After all, you did it once…

The poster child for that used to be Benedict Arnold. Dear Arlen is actually a much better example.

Ric

I loathed the cadaverous old turd when he was relevant. I loathed his self-righteous pap for changing parties again. He was a middling liberal dem in the 60s and a middling liberal repub since the 70s and on. He never changed his jaundiced self serving ways, just which party of dirt eaters he was siphoning from. The guy was a parasite of the highest order, sucking the life from anything he could lay his clammy hands on. I’m prone to think of him as a cross between the creepy undertaker in Phantasm and the prototypical child molester. Still loathe the moldy old chunk of human waste. His book would be a good thing to prop a bathroom door open or use the pages as emergency TP.

In any event, you’ll notice that Arlen was voted out and is now spending his time between memoirs and bobbing for catfish in some quiet gated pond in rural Pennsylvania.

Catfish prefer Stink Bait to Tar and Feathers. As do most bottom feeders.

Dr.Dan Benishek took over Stupak’s district in Michigan. Further proof that bottom dwellers either die a natural death or are fried in bacon fat and eaten with cornbread.

Are you a cousin of Oceania?

That said, at least the powers are not hereditary (with exception of Bushes and Kennedys).

I don’t think either of those is a real “dynasty”. Sen. Prescott Bush (R-CT) was no factor in Texas politics. G. H. W. Bush made it there on his own – on the Republican side, which was the minority in Texas state politics until the 1990s. Jeb Bush rose in Florida on his own – at least I can’t see what entrenched influence the Bush family had there.

There wasn’t much succession among the Kennedys either.

Which is not to deny there have been real American politica dynasties: the Bayards of Delaware (five US Senators); the Tafts of Ohio (US Attorney General, President, two Senators, and a Governor).

ISTM one needs at least three generations to qualify. Thus neither the Browns of California, nor the Gores of Tennessee pass.

The Stevensons of Illinois sort of qualify (Vice President, Governor, Senator). But I don’t think one should count a family where successive generations had to scratch and claw for office. Also continuity ought to be a factor. The Borens of Oklahoma (Representative, Senator, Representative) had gaps of 20 years and 8 years.

As to party-changers: some have done better than others. Winston Churchill did very well at it. He jumped to the Liberals, and was a senior minister for many years – then jumped back to the Conservatives, and became Chancellor of the Exchequer. As he bragged: “Anyone can rat, but it takes a certain ingenuity to re-rat.”

Not a fan of this alte Kacher(/Schechter/spectre) however he camouflaged himself but to be somewhat detached and unemotional about it, is he that much worse from his peers?
To chastise him, who do we pick up and say “Schechter, this is who you should aspire to be if you had any class or aspiration to better yourself”

I was reading through the entries from February 2007. The Stoat underwent an apparent transmogrification.
In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump.

@Rich Rostrom
you forgot the House of Dingell. These 2 fossils, Papa John and Baby John misrepresented Michigan since the days of Bonnie and Clyde, the Barrow Gang. And it only took 2 of them.
Term limits are for pussies. Bathhouse Barry rolled out Dingell at the crowning achievement of the regime, the PPACA/Obangacare.

Re: your Churchill quote, it seems it has lost a lot of its potency. Re-ratting is easy these days given the voting public’s attention span more befitting a goldfish. Quite sad really, given that Churchill had no internet and it was not so quick and cheap to Fisk his ass back in the day.

I am not oceania’s cousin, at least knowingly although my uncles were up to a lot of questionable practices back in the day so I can’t really be sure. He(it?) seems rather baboonish so I am leaning towards “no I am not”.

That’s why I’ll use any words the racialists want me to use, and I’ll forbid any words they want me to forbid. Because I want them to go away and BORE SOMEBODY ELSE. I simply do not care. It’s not my thing.

Same with gender, sexual orientation. What attitude will make these issue people go away and let me get back to video games and bad taxidermy and Magic Rocks and all the stuff *I* care about?

Go read a little about the European settlement of someone else’s island (New Zealand) everyone–short version, the white people got it, they ain’t giving it back, and it’s going to be called New Zealand forever.

Oceania, do you fellows go around patting yourselves on the back that the Maori only suffered a decline in population of around 40,000 after the whites got there until about 1896, with subsequent recovery thereafter? There were maybe around 86,000 at the start of white immigration.

Here’s something fun from Statistics New Zealand’s 2001 report on intermarriage, Table 7, it’s from a breakdown of opposite sex partners for men by age of male, by percentage, I believe:

European Males_____Euro_____Maori_____Pac.Peoples_____Asian_____Other
15-24_____________93.2________14.7________2.7________2.1_____0.3
25-44_____________95.0_________7.6_________1.5________1.9_____0.3
45+_______________96.2_________4.0_________0.8________1.4_____0.1

I would figure a certain degree of intermarriage, how could there not be, but really!

I won’t reproduce the whole thing, more like I am incapable, so the PDF is here, page 31, table 7:

http://www.stats.govt.nz/browse_for_stats/population/census_counts/review-measurement-of-ethnicity/~/media/Statistics/browse-categories/population/census-counts/review-measurement-ethnicity/ethnic-intermarriage-in-nz.pdf

Apologies for the horrible formatting, and apologies, SWeasel, if I’ve knackered your comment field. And for posting a great big honking comment having solely to do with race. I’ve got an explanation, if you’re interested.
