They’re heeeeere

You know that scene in Poltergeist, where it’s a quiet night and Whatshername experimentally cracks open the door to the haunted bedroom — and suddenly it’s all screaming and howling and shit flying around the room and records playing themselves? That scene?

Twitter is exactly like that lately.

Oh, I admit it’s kind of fun when things go my partisan way. It was awesome to watch the shitstorm today when President Change We Can Believe In said “you can’t change Washington from the inside” (he’s said it before, but that was back before he was on the inside. It’s a really bad message for an incumbent begging for re-election).

Mostly, though, I’m having a hard time matching pace with the Twitter cycle in election season. It’s all a little screamy and hand-wavy for me. I’m sure I must have mentioned my legendary cool, yes?

Honestly speaking, swease…I just let it all flowby like so much raw sewage, headed for the drain…and just don’t let it bother me too much.

But that works for me.

I’m not cool enough for Twitter. However, within the last week I’ve received 8 emails asking if I want to have dinner with Barack Obama. It’s getting kind of embarrassing, actually.

Scuba, I’m on Twitter: @nightflyblog.

Stoaty, thanks for the new post. The picture of that creep with his creepy creeping smile was scaring the dog.

Pretty much how I feel about all media of any kind that touches on political issues in the run up to a presidential election. ‘Specially bad these days because I recently lost the friend I could reliably vent to–not that we agreed with each other, but neither of us cared what the other’s political opinions were, or felt that it was necessary to change them. A great comfort, that, which I sorely miss. Oh, well. Less than two months. I can do this.

Drat. I forgot I am in pointy-bracket country. Apologies, Sweas. Won’t happen again. Well, won’t happen again for a while at any rate. Memory stretcheth not forever.

And, hey–at least I remembered to remove the backslash from my name!

I think the secret here is to start posting a photochop of Messina’s head attached to other pictures of people doing goofy thing with their hands (keep it clean now – or not). How about putting him into the Muslim Rage Newsweek cover? The “where’s waldo” options are endless.

I could try to do it, but my PS skills suck. A man’s got to know his limitations.

I know what you mean…when Twitter gets all wee-weed up it’s easy to get sucked into the vortex.

IMHO- Rick Perry won the stupid hand jive meme and Twitter today with this gem.

Dissent,

I am pretty certain my brain would crawl out of my mouth and drape itself over my eyes, were I to subject it to an image of a bearded spittle-flecked Jim Messina.

This is your brain on Jim Messina.

Dave Burgee (AKA, “Iowahawk”) has apparently been sucked in to the Twitterverse, which is a crying shame, given his previously exhibited talents in satirical essays. Kinda like when Bill Whittle got sucked into doing vid bits for PJM. Not that his vid bits aren’t good – they are. But some of his actual essays were essentially like the Diamond Sutra of rational thought.

S’okay, Dissent555. It’s easier when you post on the current thread. I notice there’s a spam hanging out on an old thread this morning, and I’m damned if I feel like going looking for it.

Redd, UncleB’s contempt for Twitter is so palpable you could knit sweaters out of it.

I don’t do twitter, but others do. They bring me incredible tales from a far off land, like #ifobamadontwin. Mostly they’re tales of irrational rage.

I’ve got a weird one. I follow the hashtag #Sussex, which is really useful. It gives me all sorts of local information about road accidents and village crime.

But maybe one tweet in twenty is about Sussex County, Delaware.

And maybe one tweet in ten is about a neighborhood in…well, it’s hard to tell. I think Sussex is a street in some town in New Jersey. At any rate, the hashtag is used by a group of young people of color talking among themselves. Or as they call themselves, “nikkas”.

It’s fascinating in ways I wouldn’t have the guts to post about.

Stoaty, there’s a Sussex County in New Jersey as well – rural, lots of forest, and the highest elevation in the state along the Appalachian Trail. I somehow doubt that this is the Sussex mentioned. Essex County is one of the heavily urban areas in the northeast of the state.
