Tea break over, back on your heads

trustysteed

Boo! Not Christmas any more. BOO!

In the absence of anything cleverer to say, that there is my new bicycle. It’s this one. No, I didn’t pay that much for it. Yes, it has a basket. No, I’m not going to put it on. Makes it too unwieldy in tight places.

It’ll do 15mph without touching the pedals. Illegal to sell electric bikes with a hand throttle like that in the UK since the first of Jan (thank you, EU regs!), so me and half of England rushed to get a grandfathered one before the hammer came down.

I love it. But it’s been windy or rainy (or both) every day since I started riding it to work, so it’s a real baptism by…ummm….water. Hm.

Say, that’s just a regular baptism, isn’t it?

Sweet!!

Can you still buy one with a hand throttle from a private party? Seems like a dumb rule.

I hope our British friends have made sure there are no bicycle show loopholes.

Put the basket on it. You can’t look European without the basket and some baguettes in the basket.

and a bell, and wear a beret.

Granting it is none of my business, being a subject of Emperor Buraq I; but I really hope that the promised referendum on remaining in the EU or leaving it actually does take place [it is my understanding that all the major parties have promised one at different times and reneged], that it is honest, that Britain votes to leave it, and that HMG honors the referendum results. Just so those [insert string of Chinese epithets, crude ones] in Brussels can sod off.

Imagine being able to decide what you want to eat, make, sell, or buy in your own country under laws you consent to? I grant that the “consent of the governed” part being missing is common to both our countries.

I should have bought one of those, instead of a new car. Would have been cheaper, but it has been raining in my part of California lately. Not that I’m there, but I read the weather reports, and I’m not tough enough to ride a bike in the rain.

Nice score, Stoaty! I hope you have many miles on your new bike!

It has a bell. The bell is mandatory, by law. It is the tiniest bell you ever saw, but it’s street legal.

The throttle thing…the law is written (ha!) very confusingly. Whether throttles are permitted at all, or whether they just have to be toned way, way down. Consensus is, it would be trivially easy to break the law and get away with it, but god help you if you were in any kind of accident and got caught out.

You can do all kinds of weird and wonderful things with an off-road electric bike, though. So much more powerful components are pretty easily available.

Very cool…I totes agree about front mounted baskets having snagged mine and splatted myself over the pavement…but one needs a means to carry items to & fro. I got a so-called trunk bag to mount on the back rack.

Not as charming as a wicker basket but far more useful and reasonably priced…there are many styles, sizes and colors (I got the Mountain Mike 600D in a jaunty red from Amazon for $27). It easily pops off to carry inside or as a tote bag.

Um. “Back on your heads”: sounds like an idiom? I love learning new idioms! Or am I just missing the point somehow? ๐Ÿ™‚
