Mmmm…I smell!

baldwins

One of the things I love about Britain are all the little businesses that seem like they could have sprung fully formed out of Harry Potter. Baldwin’s — “London’s oldest herbalist” — is one.

Eh, 1844 doesn’t seem that old for London, so it must be the oldest still in business. It’s gone from the Baldwin family to the Dagnell family (and from one to twelve stores to one again), but they seem to have a good handle on this internet thing and likely to survive for a while.

They sell vitamins and supplements, but also scents and soaps and food and components for making your own concoctions. I make my own custom skin cream from their stuff. Not cheap, but excellent stuff and lovely to deal with. The smartest thing they ever did was send me a free sample of this bath goo, which costs about a pound a pop but makes the whole house smell of lavender, marjoram and geranium.

And so, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to stink the place up.

geranium! Oh! Gromit! That stuff is radioactive lad!

Seriously, the missus loves old places like that, goes in, pokes around, comes out with some home made salsa or flower seeds that never get planted.

There is something magic about those old, dark stores with all the old wood and the smell of wax, and something you can’t quite identify.

Oh, and Mrs Vegetable loves her some lavender oil. I think adding some geranium scent would be terrific….if I cared, which as a man! I absolutely don’t, you understand….

Seems a good place for me to recommend my favorite place to order similar products and ingredients for making one’s own soothing concoctions: Mountain Rose Herbs. Excellent quality, decent (not great) prices, well packaged for shipping. In addition to essential oils, salves, facial and bath products, herbs, and whatnot, they also sell all sorts of standard and herbal teas. I particularly recommend their Peace Tea blend. It’s amazing. I got a little carried away at first and had to put myself on a MRH budget.

Also, geranium and lavender is a combination that exemplifies the definition of synergy – greater than sum of its parts.

When the Man from U.N.C.L.E. DVD set came out in late 2007, I was astonished to find that June (who was all over cartoon TV in the Sixties, not only playing Rocky) also did the sexy voice that told you at the end of each U.N.C.L.E. episode: “Our man from U.N.C.L.E. will be back in a moment with a look at next week’s show.”

Heck, her IMDb page showed she continued doing voices on TV until 2014! She looks familiar as an old lady; did she do some regular TV appearances? They have her down as playing “Carmelita” in an ep of Green Acres.

Stoaty—I’d love to know more about your skin cream. I used to make my own, using Unibase, but it’s no longer available, and I gave up looking for a substitute. I remake my own face bar: Dove unscented, melted down with distilled water, add ground oatmeal, then scented with Chanel No.5 bath oil. I spoon it back into the Dove boxes to make a big bar. Mildest exfoliation, suitable for use everyday. Good for my face, and I go to sleep with the faintest hint of Chanel.

Nothing special, Deborah. It’s mostly coconut oil with enough carrier oil added to make it soft at room temperature. Usually almond oil, but I’ve tried others. Jojoba, f’rexample. Some vitamin E (I’m not sold on the idea it does any good, though) and a few drops of rose geranium oil for scent.

It’s a very mildly scented light skin cream that I use on dry bits of my legs.

Thank you, Stoaty. I have a jar of coconut oil—and this summer it is already liquefied just by being in my kitchen 🙂 When I made the skin cream using Unibase, I added glycerine, distilled water and Chanel No. 5 bath oil—rather like making mayonnaise—drizzle the water in and beat it until it emulsifies, and is light and fluffy. I never thought about using coconut oil, but that seems like a good alternative and worth trying. I have terribly dry skin—the curse of being a Nordic redhead.
