Drumroll please

warrant

We’ve got the electrician coming tomorrow for a couple of odd jobs, so I’m cleaning house. As you do. And I found this thing (look up).

There’s a baker who has a booth in a local market, from whom we occasionally buy sausage rolls. He was forever telling me he used to be sausage roll maker by appointment to Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.

One day, he flagged me down on the street as I went past on my bicycle and gave me a laminated copy of his Royal Warrant. (I happen to know, from professional experience, that a lamination pouch of that size costs 50p, so I was flattered).

I don’t even particularly like sausage rolls. Have a good weekend, everyone!

Badgers, on the other paw, are very fond of hot sausage rolls and conclude that, on the whole, HMQM was a decent old stick.

If Uncle Badger and p2 are so fond of them, I think we all need more information about sausage rolls. Photographs, recipes, anecdotes. Are sausage rolls a breakfast food, or an anytime food?

I’m not fond of sausage, in general. It has to have the right spices for me to eat it.

Shocking, I realize.

I’ve never had a sausage roll. And now I want a sausage roll.

Sausage Rolls? Is that anything like Hamburger Helper burritos?

I love a good spicy sausage. I normally don’t like spicy food, but sausage is the exception. Is a sausage roll like a kolache?

Ooh the sausage roll is a close cousin to one of my faves Pigs in a Blanket. Or as I like to call them Wienies en Croute

Sausage rolls:

They’re okay hot, pretty dire cold. I’m not all that keen on pastry anyway.

Looks like the love child from the coupling of empanada and cannelloni.

Definitely looks like it’d beat-out corn-dogs, IMHO…

Of course, that’s not “setting the bar” all that terribly high.

Oh, they’ve got onions. That leaves them out of my diet!

attempt 1 using the recipe from above…. the pastry bit of it is really close.. puff pastry is kinda universal i suspect. the sausage part tho? not even close. yank sausage is too…… coarse, i think is the description. it’s not really a flavor thing, tho i’m thinkin just a generic bulk pork sausage as opposed to a commercial brand like jimmys would be a better start. gonna give the meat a second run thru a grinder next attempt…..

Onions is optional. I grows ’em but I won’t eat ’em.

Onions AND garlic please.

I’d try it without the onions. And, as one of the side effects of the chemo is a change in the taste of food, garlic is no longer my friend. Alas.

Sausage rolls are a thing of joy and beauty. Ground and lightly spiced pig parts in puff pastry: what’s not to like?

The closest I have found to UK-style sausagemeat here in Costa Rica is Johnsonville breakfast sausages, skinned.
