God, that’s so depressing

I am older than Madam Arcati.

I’ve always been a huge fan of Margaret Rutherford, a character actress famous for playing old ladies on account of she was one before she became an actress (she was originally a piano teacher).

Somehow, though, I’d managed to miss the film adaptation of Blithe Spirit. Madam Arcati wasn’t her first film role, but it was her first really successful one (reprising a character she played on stage).

Watched it this weekend and found myself deeply suspicious that the old lady I remembered just didn’t seem that much of an old lady.

She wasn’t yet. She was 53.

Happy Monday, everyone!

Not to worry Madam W.
We have preservatives in our food that keep us looking young!

Plus I got over the “older than” thing in my 20’s glancing at the occasional PlayBoy.
I couldn’t possibly have been older than THAT girl!
But you probably didn’t, uh, read those articles.

The late Labour politician Tony Benn was a cousin of Margaret Rutherford. Whenever he appeared on TV I was always amused at the resemblance, particularly in his later years.

It was remarkable how well she overcame her horrendous family circumstances. Her father murdered his father and was confined to Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum. Her mother hanged herself.

I first saw the movie about a year ago. Cant believe I missed it. Wondered why so many theater companies stage it so frequently. Now I know why. My favorite witchy movies are:

I Married a Witch
Bell, Book, & Candle
Blithe Spirit

And Warlock for some reason. Richard Grant & Julian Sand are great in it.

I saw Blithe Spirit when I was young—maybe 6 or 7—when my widowed grandmother came to live with us, and brought her big-screen Zenith console TV. Sadly, the only room in the house with space for the TV was MY room 😉 (She also had a Zenith shortwave radio that I immediately claimed for my own. I still love shortwave radio.)

But I need to see the movie again. Those were such splendid movies, and didn’t need a rating system. I can’t ever remember my parents telling me that I couldn’t watch a particular movie.

I did props for a local stage production of the show many moons ago. So many decanters…
