Happy *versery to Stoaty and Uncle Badger! As I’m writing this, it is now just past midnight Sweasel Time and I hope that means that the two of you are just the right degree of tipsy to be having a good time but not leading up to hangovers in the morning.

sweasel.com is a good place and I’m fortunate to have stumbled upon it long enough ago I have no idea at all how I did so. Thank you, and may all your surprises be pleasant ones!

What happened to Oceania?

Nvrmnd, Happy Anniversary to you both!

I don’t know what happened to Oceania. I guess we were too boring. It’s no fun trolling people who don’t get upset.

Way, way back we had a poster named Whitish Rabbit who wasn’t a troll, but more a kind of weird performance art. She had some kind of drama going in my comment threads, I don’t remember what.

Other than that, a bunch of spammers and a few one-post nasties and that’s it.

Didn’t Oceania imply (obliquely) that he was ill and dying?

Yes, you’re right. I remember that.

Hm. I did a search. Oceania has appeared periodically every six months or so. Last time was in August. When asked how he was, he said “Succumbing to the Rigors of Time.”

Sounds like Oceania is mellowing! And I remember whitish rabbit… But nothing about her shtick, except didn’t it involve another poster? But if we start remembering minions who have departed, I shall get all melancholy.

Yes. She and another poster played out a psychodrama in the comments. I never worked out what that was supposed to be and they eventually wandered away.

Fifteen years!

That’s over half the history of the Internet (as a public thing).

I’m not sure when I first started hanging around here; but I was in the first Dead Pool (July ’09).

For all the rhetoric about the constantly changing shape of the Internet, some parts of it have become quite stable.

Anyway, congrats and best wishes.

I read Ric’s book again, occasionally. It was good, and your “cover” illustration perfectly captured the premise. I hope it made him some money.

Was that the cover art with the guy swabbing the landing dock/deck/bay on a “starship”?

If so, I enjoyed that book.

That’s the one, durned. He didn’t like the illustration – it’s obvious he had in mind exactly what his character looked like and he wondered why I didn’t show him more clearly. But – having worked with authors before – I knew that would happen. I put him in strong silhouette because I knew I’d never be able to draw him the way he saw the character in his mind. It was a dodge!

Yes, Deborah – he said in the end he made enough that the IRS was hassling him on his deathbed.

FWIMBW, Stoaty, his comments to me about the artwork were seriously laudatory, particularly the
exploding spaceship and open bay doors bits. He may have taken a bit of time to settle into it…

Holy shit – my face is burning. You did what?! I have written some seriously cringe-worthy bilge in my time. And then there was the period Damien disappeared and I lost my mind right out in front of everybody.

Whew.

Well, the first time I was starting in roughly 2009, so there was a lot less backlog. And, sure, the quality waxed and waned, but it was always at least mildly (and not infrequently wildly) entertaining. Plus you’ve always had a core group of minions with interesting viewpoints–and seeing some of them make their first appearances is kinda fun.
And stuff.
