One word: Ravenholm

Oh my word, people – the Half Life 2 VR mod has just been released in beta and it is a BLAST. I haven’t encountered a bug yet and I’ve got as far as driving down the coast blowing up ant lions.

Well, I mean, I guess ant lions are bugs.

The original is 18 years old (wow! really?) and the textures are a bit jarring in VR, but the gameplay is spectacular. The team promises to release regular tweaks. It’s a fan project and it’s free, which is awesome. And good on Valve for letting them do it.

And thank you to everyone who weighed in on my USB issues. I’ve been reading up on power supplies. One article that said a gaming rig should have a 1000 watt power supply. Mine is 500, so that seems the likely culprit. I mean, it probably doesn’t qualify as a gaming rig in 2022, but it’s still likely underpowered.

Now I have to bull my way through the specs and pick one.

Oh, hey, Windows invited me to install Windows 11 today. First time. Anybody taken the plunge yet? I’m…dubious.

Good weekend, all!

Thank you for asking about Win11, Stoaty. I’m in the same situation and look forward to seeing what the consensus here turns out to be. I imagine that the two options are:

1. Win10 suxxx and Win11 suxxx worse
2. Win10 suxxx but Win11 suxxx a little less

And good weekend to you, too!

I’m waiting for the inevitable release of MS-linux…

I’m running 11 currently… (not a power user) small learning curve and no apparent diff… except they forced me into a “PIN” which I had ignored on 10 for over a year… I guess those that set it up without a Microslop account can get away with that? (dunno) Reading about it – it’s worse for privacy though.

That seems to be the general opinion of Windows 11, it’s not much different but worse for privacy. I haven’t been offered to switch on the 2 boxes I run Windows 10 on yet. I built my daily driver computer in 2015 so it might not pass the requirements anyway though I spared no expense building it. Neither of my Win 10 boxes have a camera or a microphone so they can’t spy too much…I hear worse things about Amazon Alexa.

If it wasn’t for needing to stay compatible with corporate clients or needing to use the odd Adobe program, I’d make the switch to Linux which I run in a Virtualbox VM to get comfortable with…one of these days…

Just got my new laptop (old one was windows 8.1) and amazon said it was windows 10 but this is windows 11. I know next to squat about computers (just what I need for work). So, I am not qualified to offer advice. I did tell it no every time it asked if I would share data. I am going to use this for photography and reading SWeasel and AceOfSpadesHQ etc. so I bet I get on some kind of watch list.

You can actually block MS from doing a Win 11 upgrade without your OK (which they sometimes do!). The intarwebs has a number of places that tell how to do it. It’s pretty straight forward.

Ah, I don’t know, I love that everything I write using Word goes up into “the Fog” so they can read it.

I mean, what could go wrong?

@Durnedyankee — “What could go wrong?”

FREEZE! GET DOWN ON THE GROUND!
DON’T MOVE! HANDS WHERE I CAN SEE THEM!
I SAID GET DOWN ON THE GROUND! NOW!
AND I SAID FREEZE!

BLAM-BLAM-BLAM-BLAM-BLAM… (three mag dumps)

YOU’RE UNDER ARREST FOR THOUGHTCRIME!

@uncle Al – so true…It would help, sorta, if they managed to hit their target with even one mag’s worth of rounds.

And you forgot to have them yell “Stop resisting!!!!!!”

Remember, before Trump, when the NYPD opened fire on a suspect ( fact, the guy was guilty of assassinating someone in broad daylight, on a main street. Possible fact…now he’d be out a couple hours after the shooting…) and they wounded something like 6 bystanders trying to take him out, when he wasn’t shooting back.

I add the “before Trump” on the premise it was not his fault, when clearly it probably was. The whole incident, all the way to back to before the assassination. After all, ORANGEMAN BAD!

Microsoft has deemed my PCs to be “unworthy” of Windows 11.

Fine.

I’m still trying to reload WinXP Pro on my netbook. I miss that OS.

@Tim Carlson — And I really, really miss Windows NT Workstation 4.0. It’s almost worth trying to write my own drivers.

On the initial check, Microsoft said my machine was unworthy. Now suddenly it’s okay? I think they’re rolling it out this way on purpose.
