Guess the product…

It is…drumroll, please…a garden gate hook and eye fastener.

It’s to fasten the wonky door on my wonky chicken house. But the door is so wonky, I can’t get the hook to meet the eye. Guys, I’m seriously about to thrown it into the water.

I know just how you feel. I have had days like that.

“Do not throw it into water.”
What happens when it rains? Do you get rain where you live?

Try the poor man’s latch: a length of chain and some nails.

You might try a simple toggle; a rectangular piece of something (probably wood) screwed loosely into the door jamb so that by rotating it 90° it blocks the door from opening. Rotate it back and you can open the door. The screw needs to be just tight enough so the toggle doesn’t rotate freely but no so tight you have to use a lot of force to turn it. Of course, the position of the thing has to be such that when horizontal, the toggle blocks the door but when vertical it doesn’t. But you knew that!

Alternate solution: DUCT TAPE!

did you ever consider moveing the existing hook or eye?

or both?

Sure you get rain, silly, it’s just not ‘wet’ rain.

And Amazon has a sale on the “Binford 9010 automatic self latching and unlatching chicken coop latch”,

But wait! Buy now and you get a free copy of

I don’t know what you’re complaining about, Stoaty. I am confident that when you saw the low, low price for your Chinese chicken coop, either you or Uncle B said, “That’s cheap! How can they sell it for that price? There’s gotta be a catch!”

But see? There is no catch!

I’ll show myself out- the door is open anyway.

I really, really miss that upvote/downvote facility because a couple people in this thread have really outdone themselves… in a good way!

Ron, this was a real loser of a chicken pen. The door is too large to fit into the frame, so it sticks out by the full with of the lumber. The hook and eye will never fit unless the hook is bent.

Deborah, that’s brilliant – a length of chain would be perfect.
