I’m having a weird week

Lost my wallet Tuesday. Woke up to a flat bike tire this morning.

Seemed the perfect time to raze my old XP machine to the ground and convert it to Linux. You may recall I pinched an ancient machine from work that was going in the bin. I use it in my little studio room to look at pictures of chickens and play YouTubes.

The pictures of chickens went fine, the YouTubes not so much. I upped it to 2 gig of ram, which helped, but not entirely. To be honest, I got sick of having a broken, ugly, insecure operating system that nobody supported.

I could have gone with one of those tiny Linuxes and I’m sure I would have gotten better performance, but I went with a 32-bit version of Mint and I don’t care. It looks nice, it’s tailored to work superficially much like Windows, so it’s easy. Chicken pictures look slick.

Still runs YouTubes like shite.

I’m curious, Stoatie – what’s crappy about YouTube? Not smooth? Grainy? Maybe it’s the overhead of Google Galactic HQ hoovering up all your PII to try to sell you a Peruvian didgeridoo encrusted with swarovski crystals.

Sing with me – “If it wasn’t for bad luck, I’d have no luck at alllllll …. ”

I would recommend more memory – 4GB at least. That should help smooth out your video.

Heh – I was just beginning to type out directions to use windows Task Manager to look at your network consumption and … remembered that the system was converted to Linux. erase, erase, erase. I don’t know nuttin’ about Linux.

I was very happy with Mint. Importing my wife’s extensive iPhoto library was so easy and impressive, I donated money to the folks that wrote the photo management app. Did you know you can buy tiny fanless Mint boxes for what amounts to spare change from Compulab? Let me scare up a link …. Here it is:

So sorry about the flat tire. I hope Uncle Badger hustled out there and fixed it for you 😉 I can’t remember how far you have to ride, but I’m glad you didn’t flat on the way home.

It’s only flat on one side, just stay off that side and it’s all good.

Hmm may be the wifi, huh?
Funny thing. My comcast/xfinity wifi had been jut fine.
ping a server in Jacksonville in about 16ms, Download Mbps 182, upload Mbps 11.73 but for some reason, since they started advertising their new style wifi router thingie, a lot of videos stutter and video/podcast sound volume is sketchy. Just a coincidence, I’m sure.
