My understanding, JS, is that once Mandela became an international superstar, he was moved out of the famous little cell and into what can best be described as a suite or apartment. So the prison he consistently refused to leave was a pretty cushy deal.

Of course, some unenlightened bigot might be spreading lies on that score…

I have a long list of chores to do—especially Christmas sewing projects (even though I’m sick—cough, cough). Now I can turn off the television for the next ten days and listen full-time to Radio Swiss Jazz—the finest jazz collection on the internet. Some Ottmar Liebert or Gene Harris will do nicely.

Mandela was a communist who was at best leader of a terrorist organization if not a violent terrorist himself. He marched singing songs about how evil white men are and why they should die. Upon leaving prison one of the first things he did was go to a Communist rally, and his wife is an evil murdering scum.

However, that said, he seems to have mellowed with age and became non violent, he did usher in the end of Apartheid, an evil, stupid system, and he did run the country better than the guys in there now.

Oh, make no mistake, Miz Sweasey, et.al. – I’ve no doubt that the “durance” for ol’ Nels was not ‘zactly “vile”, ‘specially after he “went viral” and became, to All The World, the official poster-person for South African Let-My-People-Go “insurgency”, any more than I doubt the stories (rumors? more like…realities, perhaps?) of what was done at his direction/behest during that “insurgency”. Apartheid was a bad idea, badly handled, and simply WRONG – “separate but equal” never is (either one), and South African apartheid policies and processes never made much of a stab at even coming close to being that – but the terrorism practiced in opposition to it is pretty difficult to justify, by any measure, and Nels was in there whole-hog. Therefore and thereby, he well deserved some “durance vile” – far more than he likely got.

You’ve just gotta see him as being some kind of home-grown success, though – he managed to survive it all for a very long stretch, and come to be “a name”, pretty much around the world. The homeland hero, writ large…

Kinda like Li’l Obambam would really, really like to be – like Da Wun, in fact, already sees himself as being.

Well when he got in office, Mandela was a lot less radical and awful than he was before then. It seems his time in prison mellowed him some. He was a pretty good president and then he retired rather than stay in power his whole life like a lot of folks in that area.
