Have we really been arguing AGW that long?

I watched an MST3K this afternoon (episode 704, 1996 — the Incredible Melting Man) and caught the clip above. Geez, I knew the notion of Global Warming went back that far, but I didn’t know we were arguing the politics that long ago.

“Pablum-puking liberals” is a Morton Downey, jr. expression, Google suggests. But whether he ever specifically addressed global warming, I could not say.

Sorry about getting a little color on my blog up there. I tried to get around it by sticking an intro on the clip, but YouTube doesn’t grab the first frame for the still. Stupid. This is my first YouTube! But possibly not my last.

Oh, and weasel’s luck! First year I had a shot at making it to the voting in the Weblog Awards, and they’ve been cancelled. Thanks for the nominations, anyhow.

My favorite was always “The Deadly Mantis”, where the giant styrafoam praying mantis was thawed out (probably by Global Whining) to wreak havok on the East Coast….

Unfortunately, it didn’t eat the Kennedy Clan while it was at it…..

I would have voted for you. And until they create the “track and field/golf” category, I’m forever doomed to be on the periphery. Alas, I’m used to the scorn.

And my alma mater seems to be seriously investigating Michael Mann, of “hockey stick” fame. Maybe my email screeching was heard after all. Ambulance chasing lawyers are now soliciting all his PhD work buddies for any evidence of fiscal malfeasance! An average of $1.5M for info should bring out a few takers.

Aw…I was going to vote for you every day.

Don’t worry about the color it will ride down with wear.

My physics BSc was 89-92, and climate science in re AGW was a major topic of interest back then. For what it’s worth, both my academic and personal tutors (one of whom got head-hunted by MIT in my second year) would have been counted as sceptics back then. I have no idea what their subsequent evolvement was, but I do know that twenty years ago it was a highly contentious subject, and to the extent there is a spurious ‘consensus’, it is of fairly recent vintage.

And there’s a huge difference between the toy time-series analyses that the EAU leak reveals and the big GCMs* that underlie the serious climate models. They’re chalk and cheese. It’s the difference between interpreting an opinion poll on Chris Dodd’s re-electability and a simulation of a Mach 26 re-entry vehicle based on results from a hypersonic nitrogen gun tunnel. Not to say that both aren’t fragrant with crap, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves here.

* they’re variants of finite-method techniques, the details of which are abstruse, and need not concern us, except if being used to pick a trillion dollars out of our pockets, in which case perhaps we should go and learn what a spectral grid quadrature is, if so inclined, so we can call bullshit. Way past my pay grade.

Heh, 1996. Not to give him too much credit, but Rush was decrying the politicisation of Gobble Worming circa 1994 if I recall correctly.

& I suspect Mike Nelson could be a tad skeptical at times.

Yeah, cbullitt over at Soylent Green and Steamboat were hoping to at least get 15 seconds of fame for best religious blog (covering AGW) but they too are victims of rug-yankage-out-from-underage. Is there a word that fits better that a clumsy RYOFU hyphenated monster?

BTW I meant to say that Islamic Rage Boy looks pretty good in that Santa hat. A tad more relaxed. Does he look less enraged or is it just me?

And a belated Happy New Year, Weas.

Actually, we were ballot-box stuffing nominations for the Real Climate site(the preferred propaganda tool of the AGW Alarmists) in the Best Religious Blog category.

Woulda made finalist, too! The tally (out of 43 nominations) was:

1st place: One Cosmos = 253 votes
2nd place: Real Climate = 149 votes
3rd place: Hare Krishna = 33 votes

That’s a win for Finalist in my book, since the top ten were to be finalists!

We were doing it just for the sheer ecstasy of being able to type “Finalist – 2009 Best Religious Blog!” after every mention of *spit* Real Climate *spit*!

(yeah. I'm going to write)

Beware: more than one link in a comment is apt to earn you a trip to the spam filter, where you will remain -- cold, frightened and alone -- until I remember to clean the trap. But, hey, without Akismet, we'd be up to our asses in...well, ass porn, mostly.
