It’s a foot!

A novelty Roman lamp from an article about how treasure finds in the UK are at an all-time high. Because of detectorists.
I’m sure I’ve mentioned the Portable Antiquities Scheme before (do follow the link and have a pootle around in their database – it’s fun!). The UK government insures a high level of reporting and recording finds by authenticating all found objects and insuring the detectorist (and landowner) are fairly compensated.
If it’s treasure – more than 300 years old and a significant amount of silver or gold – it automatically belongs to the crown by law, but if the crown (usually through a museum) claims it, the finder has to be given market value.
If it’s not treasure, they can do what they like. Not much pirating goes on here.

The Dectectorists Television show was amusing.
I particularly like the ‘vegan’ who thought pork rinds were vegetarian. Good cast.

Husband strongly hinted for years that he wanted a metal detector when we retired to FL. I did the research and bought him a good mid-level model for Christmas the first year we were here. I didn’t want to blow big money if it would sit in the garage after a few uses. He LOVED it and was constantly after me “don’t you want a beach day?”
For his birthday this year I bought him a good excellent-level model. His haul over 6 years is one gold wedding band, 2 different gold earrings, about 52 cents in various coins, 5 matchbox cars, innumerable tent/ sunshade pegs and an incredible number of beer pull tabs (you know, the ones eliminated in the 70s). Despite his lack of real treasure, I fully support his hobby because otherwise I’d never get him to spend a day at the beach😁
