For no particular reason, John Buscema

Burned my usual post-creating time cruising this random collection of John Buscema drawings. I suppose it’s kinda, sorta timely, since he did a lot of the iconic work on the Avengers comics (now a major motion picture!).

Me, I spent the long Summer between the end of High School and the beginning of college with Conan the Barbarian. Hey, when you’re going away to art school, you can do this and call it studying. Score!

Now don’t you feel silly about that stupid law or engineering degree, Sir or Madam?

Lookit the pictures, and have a good weekend!

Wait, if you haven’t seen the Hating Breitbart trailers, go and do that thing also.

Already posted the link on my completely unread blog, because I’m just all so proactive n stuff like that.

I’m also about a week from the end of term, yes, the salvation of summer hols is at and.

And I don’t have any idea what the Avengers is, are? Never read the comic. If it is a comic. Whatever it is I haven’t read it. Clearly I did not go to art school.

I never was a big Buscema fan, either one, but he was good when he wasn’t doing comics. I think he was just rushed.

Geez, Nina, it’s the current blockbuster hit mega wonder record breaking all time Hollywood movie.

Sheesh.

It’s a dark day here in Texas. I refused to pick him in the dead pool, even knowing he wasn’t doing well.

*sigh*

Nina, if you like action movies with some funny elements (some more than others)…

Go and rent the following movies and watch them in the order I give them.

Iron Man, Hulk (2008, NOT the 2003 Ang Lee abomination), Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America.

Then go see The Avengers.

And you will know why we all love this movie…

Weasel, when you saw Avengers, did you randomly stand up and shout “USA! USA!”?

And I’ve met and had drinks with the guy who did the Hating Breitbart movie. Awesome guy, and the movie is even better,

Wease, do you see what I see in some of Buscema’s line work and shading/shadowing?

Namely, the presence of more than little Byrne Hogarth influence?

Just curious. Fan of Frazetta, Hogarth, Buscema, Kirby. Illustrators are mah heroes. Never grew up I guess.

It’s absolutely true that I miss out on a lot of pop culture refences by not having seen any of those movies, and my kids are hammering me about Firefly, too. Someday, I’ll sit down and watch ’em, but not this weekend, I’m making aprons for Haiti.

And the blog is at http://thingsthatmakelife.blogspot.com for what it’s worth. Mostly my exhausted blather, but the one about saving Western Civ ain’t too bad. And I’ve linked to Stoaty, natch. Nothing like a blogspot blog to give voice to blatherings!

I should say that artists like this make me really jealous of the way they can draw the exaggerated human form in a way that it looks completely realistic. They really know their anatomy, and I wish I could draw like that.

Even the Brits should be lowering the flags for the passing of Carol Shellby – remember the legendary Sunbeam Alpine Tiger? Where Carol shoehorned a small block Ford V-8 into a car not much bigger than an MG Midget? VROOOM!

A friend of mine had one, Mike C. It was fine in a straight line, but one night we ended up pointing the wrong way on a blind bend….. scary beastie, it was. Wouldn’t mind one, though!

Uncle B, you were using it wrong. Those things (like most of what Shelby built) were meant to go in a straight line. Look at it this way: straight-line motion is covered by Special Relativity. In order to go around curves you have to accelerate, and that gets you into General Relativity with all that scary math. Best to stick with the simpler solution, no?

Shelby bought a place in my home town; the land had originally belonged to one of my least favorite cousins, and sits across a road from the back of the family farm. I never met the man because I haven’t lived there since 1966, but Mother did, and thought him a fine fellow. Rumor has it that he built a climate-controlled storage building for his souvenir cars, and Google Earth confirms that there’s something there that could fit the description. I wonder exactly what’s inside…

OK, so how come nobody is commenting about the fact that Buscema advocates paying off hookers with Weasel Pelts? And this is the place our resident weasel [mis]spent her youth? Hmm.
About 55 drawings down from the top (count not likely to be accurate) there are a series of Conan strips (the first comic panels which have dialog) where the ladies from ‘over on golden cock road’ invite Conan to drop by for some help to dissipate any loneliness. Long before the invention of the razor I suppose it was easier to mistake a woman for a furrier. Bah-Dump-Bump…

When I think of the Avengers I think of Emma Peel in black leather jumpsuit. Never was much inro comics, but then I can’t draw either.

Sorry to hear about Carroll Shelby. Never rode in a real Cobra but snagged a ride in a good replica once. It was a beast – more of a roller-coaster thrill ride than a car. About 15 minutes is all you can take before the vertigo and heat from that big Ford engine wear you out.

Weasel – I’m in Japan wirh Mrs. Vegetable who hails from these parts. We’ve visited the family and since then have been doing the Onsen (hot springs resorts) tour. Oita, Beppu, Kagoshima Fukuoka – all over the southern island of Kyushu. I love the place. It’s sort of like if you left America out in the rain and it shrunk, and the ink on all the lettering on the signs ran together. Oh, and then someone put acid in the water supply. If you think of it like rhat, it all suddenly makes sense. I picked up some tea for you.. Gotta run, I’m mooching somebody’s wifi and I’ve kind of been in one place too long.

I noticed it as well, but felt it would be impolite to discuss something so indelicate on my favorite mustelid blog. Plus, I place too high a value on my own pelt to risk it 😀
