Cousin Spotty!

My cousin sent me this picture. She took it in a museum in Barbados. We are, in fact, related to Alexander Spotswood, a thing we keenly remember because our grandfather – an amateur painter with more enthusiasm than talent – made a copy of this portrait.

It hung in our grandparents’ house. We called him Cousin Spotty.

Wikipedia do say:

Alexander Spotswood (12 December 1676 – 7 June 1740) was a British Army officer, explorer and lieutenant governor of Colonial Virginia; he is regarded as one of the most significant historical figures in British North American colonial history.

Oh, I see. The “most significant historical figures” part is a good indication Cousin Spotty was some kind of distant cousin. My grandfather, bless him, was a terrible clout chaser.

I’ll have to ask my cousin. Some years ago, her daughter did the deep dive necessary to join the DAR.

I’d join myself, but it’s not exactly a prestige organization in Jollye Olde.

Any truth to the rumor HottyTottyGirl won the DP with Julian Sands?

(I think I’ll post my comment hear as well as in the DP thread)

The Bossweasel needs to make a ruling, but the closest thing I can find to an official date of death (Wikipedia) says Julian Sands died

c. January 13, 2023, San Gabriel Mountains, Mount Baldy, California, USA

The element of doubt resides entirely in that letter “c.” but one could argue that he was not “living when picked.”

Aye, but he was Schrodinger’s actor until they found the body. He wasn’t provably dead, or provably alive.

He could have been shacked up with a Leanan Sidhe, or making beef jerky for a Sasquatch, or bear skat, for all we knew.

Are you related to the Spotsylvania Spots?

Being a Spotswood descendant, and a bit of a painter yourself…

Can you tell me how to mix up a batch of spotted paint?

Spotted paint? LOL! That’s silly! Everybody knows there is no such thing. To get the spots, first you put down a solid layer of spot color, then go back over it with a layer of the holey paint.

Alkyd you not!

@Uncle Al – genius sir, genius!

It seems I’ll have to give up on my plan to do it all in one coat, so I’ll wait till October because it’s too blasted hot here right now for two coats.

durnedyankee ‘splained it.
So…unless my sister, the forensic pathologist, gets to play with what ever gooey remnants were found, and determines, via the age of the maggots (I saw it on a ‘Quincy’ episode), an approximate death time, senor Sands could have been alive and well, cavorting in nature several weeks after his announced disappearance, until Sasquatch squashed his head like a melon for a bite of the newly smoked jerky.
All well after HottyTottyGirl’s first time picking him making it a legit pick….or not. Your call Swease.

Stoaty, there are two Spotswood men listed in the DAR roster of American Revolutionary War patriots. Both were grandsons of dear Cousin Spotty, and both were officers (a General, and a Captain), and they were brothers. The younger brother—the Captain—was wounded at the Battle of Brandywine (Creek).
