What’s going on here?

We’ve been cheated of a summer this year. I had the central heat on every day in May and much of July. June had some nice patches and August is mixed, but certainly not hot.

So when it’s sunny and fine, I’m out there in my deckchair staring at the sky (alternating with my phone) as much as poss.

About an hour ago, I saw this. It’s a ribbon of (cloud? contrail?) with a twist in the middle. We do get a fair bit of small plane traffic out here, including the occasional acrobat, but I’ve never seen anything like sky writing.

If you’d like to see it larger and in color, including our wonky roofline, click this here thing.

The hell?

It doesn’t look like something deliberately done to me. Keep in mind that clear air moves in a bunch of different ways. At one altitude it can be moving generally in one direction and at another altitude vertically nearby be moving in another direction. Where the two air masses abut, there’s always turbulence. The usual term is wind shear.

I’m assuming contrail. That it appears denser on the left side of the photo than on the right, with that twist between the two different-looking sections, makes me think that the contrail-generating aircraft was either climbing or descending and it passed through a section of wind-shear turbulence. It’s either that or our lizardoid space alien overlords are getting careless.

Yep, cooler than usual here in Eastern Canuckistan, it’s also been raining every second or third day so I just sit outside when it’s sunny.

101 today…92 at 8:12 PM…same temp as the pool. Ugh. The veggie garden is fried. So I could use less summer. All one can do is stay inside. Going from a building to the car and back is ugly. I have to take an Eskie to get groceries home safely.

It’s been rain off and on since July in the Newfangled namesake of your current location.
Some hot days but a lot of damp.
