If you keep picking at that thing, it’s going to leave a scar

atac

So I started off this morning with a post about nondestructive testing — you know, where you slather a special dye on cast metal and shine a blacklight on it and any flaws or cracks fluoresce. I had this whole political metaphor going about how McCain was the dye and the Republican coalition was the machine and…oh, trust me, it was working. Then IE hiccuped and I lost the whole thing.

When I went to retrace my steps, I got totally distracted. First I ran across this article about the nondestructive testing that was done on the Liberty Bell after this nutcase walked up behind it and began whaling on it with a sledgehammer (remember that? I didn’t). That brought me to this cool site about the Liberty Bell, which is where I ran into these people. The ATAC people, from the graphic.

Oh, it’s okay. The “Avenging” doesn’t appear to involve smiting of any kind. The group wants to ensure any monuments commemorating the President’s House in Philadelphia are constructed employing sufficient persons of African heritage and that it is officially noted that Washington kept slaves there. The usual shakedown, in other words.

Which is why “avenging” is such a jarring choice of words, with its hint of violence — or punishment, anyway. And their position paper:

ATAC requires the commemorative project because justice demands it. Justice demands it because our ancestors as forced laborers transformed America into the economic world power that it remains today, because our ancestors died for America in all of its wars, and because our ancestors had their freedom, culture, family, language, land, religion, name, and often their sanity, limbs, and even lives ruthlessly stripped from them for three centuries by America (and other European-initiated slave trading countries) in a manner unlike anything ever experienced in the history of humankind. ATAC also requires the commemorative project because it an essential step toward telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth about American history.

Jesus! Can we turn up the AC a couple of notches? Slavery is a shameful blot on America’s founding — and we took to it embarassingly close to modern times — but it was hardly “unlike anything ever experienced in the history of humankind.” As historical atrocities go, US slavery was middlin’ atrocious.

Has this ahistorical sense of unique grievance been simmering out there all along? Am I just becoming aware of it on account of Obama’s racial two-step? Being a white girl from Tennessee, I reeeeally don’t like to talk about race, but maybe white cringe is partly how we got here.

This is not headed anyplace good.

From Ace:

And Lo, Jesus appeared among the throng, and he spake, saying, “Is it not the CIA which created AIDS? And the American government which provides crack to blacks? And Yay and verily, is it not true that black on black crime is only wrong because it’s blacks fighting ‘the wrong enemy’? And shouldn’t they be killing the ‘right enemy’ instead, if you know what I mean, and I think you do?”

And Jesus winketh, and all around kneweth who he meanteth, and all around began gathering baseball bats and breaking beer-bottles, knowing, in their hearts, that it was well and truly on. For that is how Jesus rolled.

And Jesus cried “God Damn America!” and it so was damned, and by the way, FDR blew up Pearl Harbor too, chickens roosting explosively along the hull of the USS Arizona, as God decreed.

Damned right this is not going anywhere good, Weaz. I foresee baaaad things when ‘marchin’ weather’ gets here. Can anyone say ‘1968’?

And I have to admit, this is beginning to get under my calm, even-tempered, sugary-sweet skin.

Heh. I just read that at Ace’s.

When I was looking up this group today, I ran across a Chicago Tribune article from over a year ago about Obama and Wright and the church and the trouble it was likely to cause. Obama hadn’t even formally announced yet. So it’s been simmering all this time.

I don’t see anything sinister in the timing. I think it exploded now because somebody watched the videos. Hearing that so-and-so made inflammatory remarks, and watching tape of someone screaming “God DAMN America!” are two completely different emotional exercises.

As someone whose skin is not white, I disagree with your hesitation to discuss race issues. White is a race, or so it is claimed. Equal to all others, then, right? And for that matter, what is right and true is right and true regardless who says it or what the speaker’s skin color is.

This hesitation seems racist. Or racialist.

Just my 2 paise.

I don’t mean to offend or stoke anyone. I’m just puzzled why this issue is politely ignored when it should be tackled and wrestled until it cries out “Uncle!” Maybe I’m wrong. (And considering it’s 2-to-1 so far, I likely may be.)

It’s not going anywhere pretty, but that’s the nature of the issue. And part of the cause/reason lies with the idiot identity politickers.

The reason I said don’t engage is that all this is amongst the Dems. It’s conflicting segments of a flawed ideology and agenda-driven MSM hypocrisies that are grinding gears here, and I’d just as soon see it crash and burn. If Cons engage, I assure you it’ll all be blamed on us.

The falsehood of those distasteful utterances is easily demonstrated. But debate is only useful when open and reasonably dispassionate minds are involved. That situation does not obtain here. Comment from S. Weasel

Hahaha…relax, Musli. I was just commuting home. I brought the topic up, so I’m not entirely averse to it.

But I think white cringe comes from two sources: one, we really were profoundly shitty to black people for a very long time. I think we’re less embarrassed about slavery (which was such a long time ago and which we fought a horrible war to put right), than the stupid, petty shit we did…like make them drink out of separate water fountains. I mean, that’s just spite.

Secondly, there are many different sub-groups to the racial grievance camp, and they believe different — and sometimes quite contradictory — things.

For example, one group promotes the idea that the way black people play with language is profoundly creative. Another recoils in horror at the suggestion that black people, outside the ghetto, speak any differently than white people. Another group believes that black people speak the way they do because they first learned English from ignorant white people in the South (I haven’t heard that one in a long time, but it was a great favorite).

Now, what do you say?

When I was a kid, white people had opinions about race. When I got older, we were afraid to have opinions, and we just asked what it was we were SUPPOSED to believe and we tried to believe that. Now, we know there nothing we can say that won’t get “racist!” shouted at us, so we try our damnedest not to talk about it at all.

Comment from Steamboat McGoo

Exactly, Musli. And – I hate to admit it – the Left is really good at spinning and “nuancing” words and concepts. Better’n Righties, I dare say. Righties have a habit of intellectual honesty, and we automatically assume it in others: Lefties have no such compulsions. They confuse appearing to win the argument with being right, so the end automatically justifies the means.

Musli – was that a touch of sarcasm I detected?

If these fucktards are going to grievance monger, then they should know all of the facts of slavery before they demand squat. Slavery, is just another tool the underbelly of humanity does to one another. If you are going to talk about it, talk about all of it. No culture/persons are immune from the stain.

As regards to the ‘recent’ in memory slave trade –

Who sold who?
Who benefited most?
Who did it for ideology, who for greed?

White slavery started about the same time as black slavery, but noone brings that up. For 300 hundred years both went on. Rogue euros and muslim pirates trolled the seven seas and kidnapped many a hapless ship or village and sold them to their muslim masters in N. Africa and arab states. Not many records were kept (beyond the many pleas on record in various Euro gov. archives) because their life was not worth squat to their illiterate masters (same crap with Rwanda, Darfur, noone knows the actual body count because they don’t count their dead – they mean nothing to them). On the other hand, whites tend to keep record of their ‘property’ because at some level they gave them value – inhumane as it was.

Long story short, eventually – after 300 years – the Euro wusses got sick of the raids and kidnapping and paying/negotiating to get their citizens out of horrific conditions, that they passed laws first to end the African slave trade. Then they sent a descendant of a white slave to blow the shit out of Algiers. The US ended it here 30 years later. The white Christian west had to take the rest of the world kicking and screaming to denounce slavery.

But, of course, it still continues in it’s place of origin – N. Africa and the ME – and noone says a word other than to point the finger at the great white satans.

As far as the dingbat shakedown artists above…screw ’em and the schools they refuse to hold to account and the lack of curiosity in general. Though how do you get the truth through to blockheads?

‘Christian Slaves, Muslim Masters’ – Robert C. Davis
‘White Gold’ – Giles Milton
‘Black Rednecks and White Liberals’ – Thomas Sowell (Mr. Sowell touches on the subject throughout many of his writings.)

McGoo: No, no, no. No sarcasm. I truly never saw it that way, but your perspective explains why people are hesitant to engage in this debate.

Your Highness: Don’t put the whites down so swiftly. Compared to today, yes, whites were not very pleasant indeed. But most other people are far more racist than whites are and/or were. Consider the Japanese in Japan. (Lokki might be able to help clarify or admonish me on this.)

I don’t think others make other races drink from separate drinking fountains, but at least that means that whites and blacks were in the same building. In most other countries, every people has their place and they had better stay there.

Consider being a brown person in the United Arab Emirates, and having Arabs treat one as an ignorant, illiterate, uncultured rube…simply because most South Asians there are laborers. Not a hypothetical. I experienced it firsthand. They didn’t care to find out whether I was one of said laborers. Their entire attitude towards the entire race was so colored. (Heh. I make pun.)

Now the mental merry-go-’round, that’s another matter all together.

Frankly, I think Ebonics is an abomination. People must learn to speak well to move forward, and enabling people to speak atrocious English does the black community no favors whatsoever.

Ebonics –

Much of the cultural pattern of Southern rednecks became the cultural heritage of Southern blacks, more so than survivals of African cultures, with which they had not been in contact for centuries. (Even in colonial time, most blacks on American soil had been born on American soil.) Moreover, such cultural traits followed blacks out of the southern countrysides and into the urban ghettos – North and South – where many settled. The very way of talking, later to be christianed “black English”, closely followed dialects brought over from those parts of Britain from which many white Southerners came, though these speech patterns died out in Britain while surviving in the American South, as such speech patterns would later die out among most Southern whites and among middle-class blacks, while surviving in the poorer black ghettos around the country.

i.e. ‘dis’, ‘ax’, ‘dat’, ‘I be’, ‘you be’, ‘I hain’t’
– from ‘Black Rednecks, White Liberals’, Thomas Sowell

Bottom line, the proponents of ebonics are just encouraging their kids to be like the ignorant southern white folks they despise. Putzes.

It never occurs to them to carry a chip on their shoulders. They want to get their share of the cash, and be happy just like everyone else.

Therefore I’ve come to the conclusion that the current state of Black American culture is exactly that: Cultural.

I admit to having worried a bit about what will would happen when if Obama were elected.

If da man is keeping them down, but Obama becomes the man, but they don’t get up, then what happens? Obama very much becomes the little man at the top of the stairs.

I think that Black American Culture would literally implode.

The fact that Obama now won’t be elected will be put down to racism rather than his politics and that means business as usual for the racebaiters.

My Dad used to teach Fortran at the local college just for fun – and to get out of the house. On his quiz on printing techniques he would alway put a question: Write the code to print the following – “John’s dog is black.”

Note the apostrophe on the word John’s.

If you didn’t get that printed, then you got points taken off. If I recall correctly, to print a literal apostrophe, you had to use two apostrophes (”) without space. Or sumpin like that.

And that was his conclusion – they had a chip on their shoulders that he could not understand. He loved being here and couldn’t understand why they were so negative.

Thing was many of these kids came from the same failing school district I went to…deseg, the whole thing. I had to work my patootie off double shifts to afford to go, they got a free ride due to the quota/affirmative action most state schools have in place. That was another thing that made my Nigerian friend shake his head….they liked to rub his face in it.

That sucks McGoo. What a way to go.
But would you rather go that way or be married to Madonna?
I bet she is a very difficult person to live with. She has the look of my part-barfly grandmother.

Hey-hey! Hours after being sworn into office, the NEW gov of NY (Blind Melanin Paterson) admitted he had an affair. Late news: AoS says the Govs wife admits to one too! It never ends!

I wonder what she looked like? His story can only be described as … touching.

I called it! Every damned gov in the country is busy schtupping someone they shouldn’t be…I wonder what MO’s gov is doing, and with whom, and with what battery-operated accessories?

The image of all these thousands of elected wieners in Washington – erect and waving around – is more than I can bear.

Everything is going to shit in the world, and I’m gonna watch!

On the subject of European racial problems, I think it’s perhaps worth saying that there is a distinct tension in the UK (erupting in violence from time to time) between blacks of Caribbean descent and those more recently arrived from Africa. The latter are more likely to be as porknbean describes her Nigerian friend, the former blessed with the attitude problem you’re speaking of.

The victimhood theme is one encouraged by our Leftists, too.

Without victims to “help” with our tax dollars – and to use to “shame” everyone else – , how else can Liberals feel good about themselves?

He blamed the problems in the Middle East on Islam.

Good, now all he needs to do is rightly blame the problems in our country on liberalism and I might give him a moment’s thought.

Well, no, dude is solidly Marxist. That’s not changing.

It’s an okay speech. I guess. I’m not the intended audience.

I used to be able to steal signal from a conference center next door, but they moved us. There is a coffee shop nearby that has free wifi, but I haven’t investigated. I know I can’t snag a signal from here (shoot, I can’t even get cellphone coverage from here).

The best explanation of why Whites adore Obama that I’ve read yet.
In the Wall Street Journal

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB120579535818243439.html?mod=opinion_main_commentaries

” How to turn one’s blackness to advantage?

The answer is that one “bargains.” Bargaining is a mask that blacks can wear in the American mainstream, one that enables them to put whites at their ease. This mask diffuses the anxiety that goes along with being white in a multiracial society. Bargainers make the subliminal promise to whites not to shame them with America’s history of racism, on the condition that they will not hold the bargainer’s race against him. And whites love this bargain — and feel affection for the bargainer — because it gives them racial innocence in a society where whites live under constant threat of being stigmatized as racist. So the bargainer presents himself as an opportunity for whites to experience racial innocence. “

Tell you what, Weaz, when you leave that company they’ll get no more of my business! harumph!

Meanwhile, we just *may* come out of this Supreme Court thing with an intact, individually applicable 2nd Amendment interpretation.

I am feeling cautiously woot-like sensations right about now. But its still early and our collective gun-owning asses are still hanging out…

Naw, I like this company fine, McGoo (I’m coming up on my 25th anniversary; I’d be a real booboo if I hung around that long and hated it). It’s this particular office I don’t like. Oh, and our IS staff — I been rasslin’ those guys for decades.

I’m about to be a non gun owner 🙁

Ahhh…sorry. Information Services. Computer people. Except, they’re not.

My department (the art department!) had the first PC in the company. The sciency types were forbidden to have such preposterous toys — they had those big ol’ tape things in the basement. In the early days, our IS people often bragged that they didn’t own home computers. They were real computer professionals.

You can imagine how useless they were when you had a computer problem.
