alsocrumb

This song came across my feed today. I present it without comment. Never heard it before, not going to favorite it, but I am — I admit this — an unironic, unapologetic fan of R Crumb and the Cheap Suit Serenaders.

Yes, I have some inkling what a perv Crumb is. Please not to be telling me details. I like this music.

I have all his albums but the first one which, as far as I was aware, was never re-issued on CD.

But wait — I’m wrong! Looky here. It was reissued. In 2002. In…Japan?

Oh, Japan! I ain’t paying £250 for a Robert Crumb album.

First time I heard it was by Ian Whitcomb:

He also popularized “Where Did Robinson Crusoe Go With Friday On Saturday Night” and “Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavor On The Bedpost Overnight?”

Though being a Limey he probably misspelled “flavor.”

I am happy to say that Mr. Crumb is still with us (well, as much as he ever was). Likewise, my personal favourite, Gilbert Shelton, whose Fat Freddy’s Cat kept me occupied for many a happy hour in my yoof.

By a twist of fate, or so Wikipedia tells me, both Mr Crumb and Mr Shelton currently live with their respective wives in France. I wonder why?

… and NOW, direct from Noo Yawk Shitty, as live as vinyl can be, the healthy regurgitations and flirtations from Tin! Pan! Alley! (Note the influence of SatchMo in the later vocalizations). This little ditty has a long history so don’t be stuffy!!!

I use to see one of his brothers all the time, before I knew who he was, sitting and begging with his little Buddhist begging bowl, in front of Gumps.

Heard “Persian Rug” on the radio and liked it. Looked him up and was surprised it was the Keep on Trucking guy.

I always thought K-Tel Records should put together a collection of bawdy songs!

Foolbert Sturgeon lives in Kansas I think. He wrote the New Adventures of Jesus and he chose that name to mess with his buddy Gilbert Shelton. It worked. Most people thought it was Gilbert Shelton. They drew for the old Daily Texan student newspaper back the the sixties.

Yesterday was a holiday you know.

It was the day we officially celebrate the guy who’s dream we’ve not only ignored but worked so hard to destroy over the last 49 years.

Your weird music reminded me of Wall of Voodoo’s Mexican Radio. Now I have an earworm. So I’ll share.
