Teasels in training

Teasels are spikey plants beloved of dried flower arrangers. I have only ever seen them fully dried, but on our nature walk the other day, we saw some when they were still clad in purple flower petals. They look like thistles (they’re not). Pretty things.

They’re called teasels because they were once used to tease the nap of woollen cloth. Wikipedia tells me they aren’t native to the US, where they are regarded as an invasive species.

Why am I babbling about teasels? I have spent my day writing short (but hopefully not terse) emails. Do you know what happens when you send a work email to several hundred English people? At least a hundred of the buggers write chatty emails back, like you were writing just to them…

So…you could have been “S.Teasel” in a spelling auto-corrected version of the universe, yes?

Put ‘Bulletin’ or ‘Newsletter’ or something in the subject line so they know it’s a mass communication. You can put a custom ‘Reply-To’ address on a mass mailout saying something like ‘do-not-reply@mydomain.com’ to give them a hint. When they click reply button it’ll put the dummy address in the address field. Even if they send a reply, it’ll go into a catch-all garbage bin on your mail server.

I love teasels. They are botanically unique. Many composite flowers bloom from the bottom up, some bloom from the top down. Teasels bloom a ring around the middle, which splits into two rings, one going up to the tip, one going down to the base. If you’ve ever seen a time-lapse video of it, it’s fascinating.

Teasels are abundant here across the fruited plains of northern Illinois.

Thank you for the heads up, Greg. Here is time lapse footage of a teasel blooming. Cool!

(yeah. I'm going to write)

(oooo! you have a website?)

Beware: more than one link in a comment is apt to earn you a trip to the spam filter, where you will remain -- cold, frightened and alone -- until I remember to clean the trap. But, hey, without Akismet, we'd be up to our asses in...well, ass porn, mostly.
