Badge of honor

Over at the excellent Watts Up With That blog (which I read and would surely put on my blogroll if I weren’t such a banana about updating my blogroll), they’ve got a thread going on a recently published ‘blacklist’ of climate skeptics.

General opinion in the comment thread: it’s an honor to be on the list, rather irritating to be left off of it and, on the whole, it would be awfully gratifying to have some kind of actual badge that one could wear signifying one is a member of the skeptocracy. A blacklistophile.

That’s when my name came up.

I agreed to take some of the rough ideas and smooth them off a bit. And then we’re going to…umm…I’m not sure, actually. Take the best and put them on buttons? Take all the damn things and put them on buttons?

I don’t know. We can work that out later. For now, let’s kick around some ideas. In this thread, I’ll post pics of some of the stuff I’ve done from some of the suggestions from WUWT. Feel free to chime in and claim your idea, if you spot it — it was a long thread and I didn’t take names. If you’ve created artwork to illustrate your idea, email it to stoaty@ (I wish you could post pictures into the thread yourselves, but WordPress won’t allow it).

If you want to create artwork that’ll actually be usable, it needs to be about 900 by 900 pixels for a 3″ button and more like 2400 pixels for a t-shirt. I know what you’re thinking — it looks great on my screen and it’s only 150 pixels! — well, it won’t look great in print without all them extra pixels. I swears.

Ready? Begin.

Hey S. Weasel,
Thanks for picking up the ball and running with this. The photos I used, other then the camping space heater which I heavily reworked, are my own so rights aren’t an issue and the designs I created based on some of the comments (also originals).

The jpg of the buttons page was done in InDesign.

Let me know if you’d like me to send you the original InDesign files to save you some time. I can save it in CS3 or CS4 or pull a pdf into Illustrator 3 or 4.

I’ll post the original high res art to the flicker page where you got the jpgs.

The polar bear needs some final retouching; eyes, nostrils, and possibly some heat waves coming off the face of the camping heater. I can do this if you feel its worth producing.

Other ideas I thought were funny but didn’t execute:

Someone holding a lighter or match to the top bulb of an hour glass filled with glacial ice.

Al Gore with a Sherlock Holms pipe blowing bubbles. Probably to negative to bother with.

Regards,
John from cA

@Mike C., Spad13, and Nina: Thanks for the thumbs-up on my broken hockey stick image (or rather, the idea for it). I have a revision that would improve its caption. Change from “Consensus Resistance League” to “Gore Resisters League.” This is wittier because its wording is much closer to the originators of the image, the War Resisters League. (The revision rhymes and uses Resisters instead of Resistance.) Gore is closely associated with the hockey stick, having used it in many presentations.
———–

I further suggest that the white Stevenson screens be colored green and overlayed by an green image of Mr. Yuck, not the current modified smilie-facial lines. The visual image wordlessly communicates that the temperature records and the associated record-collection process are revolting. Here’s a link to a pageful of Mr. Yuck images:

Hi,

There’s an online contest with a $500 prize for a tattoo to show that one is a scorcher-scam scoffer. (I.e., to express ones deviationist / denier position on manmade global warming.) The deadline is June 16th. Here’s the link: http://junkscience.com/2011/06/06/win-500-in-the-climate-change-denier-tattoo-sweepstakes/comment-page-1/

Here are the rules:

1. Entrants agreed to be bound by the the Contest Rules.
2. JunkScience.com, in its sole discretion, will determine the winner from Contest entries. All determinations made by JunkScience.com are final.
3. The winner will receive Five Hundred Dollars ($500) in a single, lump sum payment. Winner must have a US bank account to collect. JunkScience.com will not transmit funds internationally.
4. All entries must represent the original work of an entrant that has been produced specifically for the Contest. Copyright and trademark infringement is prohibited.
5. Entries will be accepted starting June 6, 2011. No entries will be accepted after June 16, 2011. Contest results will be announced within a reasonable time after June 16, 2011.
6. Entries must be submitted in .jpg or .gif format.
7. Entrants consent to their entries being posted on JunKScience.com, including public review and comment.
8. Entrants waive all rights and claims against JunkScience.com related to, or arising from the Contest.
9. Contest void where prohibited.

===========
Here’s what I posted on that thread:

I’ve come up with an unambiguous, striking, and clever tattoo (or T-shirt or coffee cup) for us scorcher-scam scoffers. (It may not qualify for your contest, but if not I hope it will be endorsed by the site as a “winner” anyway.):

A pair of upraised, chain-shackled hands decisively snapping a hockey stick (with its blade upturned at the right).
It is based on the well-known (to many warmists) logo of the War Resisters League, in which the hands are snapping a rifle.
A large, easily readable caption around the perimeter of the button would read, “Gore Resisters’ League.”

In response to an earlier version of my suggestion that I posted on WUWT (which had a weaker slogan, a too-small typeface, and lacked the chain), a kindly blogger named S. Weasel created an image that came close to my vision, here: [this site’s address given]. I made a couple of comments on that thread about the design that document my claim to be its originator.

I hope someone here will enhance his version in the way I’ve advocated—then I might take it to a tattoo artist and “get it on.” (He’d blow it up on a copier and use it as a tattoo-template.)
===========

I hope you (Mr. Weasel) would make the three revisions to the image you’ve posted here and split the prize with me 50/50. (If you don’t have a US bank acct. I’ll accept the prize and forward the $250 to you.) (Please e-mail me if you’d like to discuss this with me offline.)

Comment from S. Weasel
Time: June 13, 2011, 1:53 pm

Hiya, Roger. You may pinch the design (plus your revisions) and claim it entirely for your own, with my blessing. After all, I pinched it from the War Resisters League.

I don’t think I have that one at a larger size, but it shouldn’t be too hard to find someone to reproduce it for you.

Comment from Roger Knights
Time: June 14, 2011, 7:52 pm

Hi SW, — The thing is:

1. I don’t just need the design reproduced & enlarged, I need a revised version. (The text-rim around the edge should be enlarged and revised (“Gore” in place of “Consensus”) and shackles with a 6″ (say) chain added to the wrists. The current version isn’t powerful enough for me to have tattood on myself. (I have none as yet—this would be a first.)

2. You’re the only person I know who could do it for me–especially on short notice. The deadline is two days away.

3. The only reason I claimed to be the design’s originator is to satisfy the contest rules. Your work in crafting the image was at least as important as my contribution. (I’d be happy to let you have the entire $500.)

4. I don’t think we’ve “pinched” our IDEA from the WRL; rather we’ve parodied it, which is not an infringement of copyright under US law.

Incidentally, here are a couple of original (non-pinched) twists I put on the common phrase, “Too big to fail”:

Too big to jail (This got widespread traction)
Too PIIG to bail (A suggested rallying cry for anti-bailout euro-skeptics in Finland, etc.)

PS: Check out this scorcher-scam-scoffer site, whose owner has adopted a beagle as his totemic animal:

Comment from S. Weasel
Time: June 14, 2011, 9:15 pm

Oh, I’m not worried about copyright infringement. It’s more a) stuff like this is more work than it looks, b) I think it’s a kinda ugly design so c) I would be horrified to think of this image tattoo’d permanently on your skin. I have enough things to lie awake at night feeling guilty.

You could probably pick up a cheap P’shop artist here: http://www.photoshopgurus.com/forum/photoshop-freelance-work/ (I was going to suggest here http://www.conceptart.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=11 but they’ve done something funny with their hiring forum).

You’d be amazed what you can get waving a $20 in front of a bunch of unemployed artists. Let somebody else’s karma take the hit.

Comment from Roger Knights

Hi SW,

OK, I won’t get a tattoo! (I mostly floated the possibility in hopes it would motivate you positively.)

Could you post (or e-mail me) your hockey stick image as a “singleton” (not part of a strip of three) so I can forward it to one of the artists at the link you gave? It would be less work for him to modify it than to create one from scratch.

Thanks in advance, Roger
