Happy Thanksgiving, fellow Yanks!

Oh, yes. We observe Thanksgiving. And then some. We do it as a late night meal, though, so I’m just doing prep now.

Candied yams. Which the Internet tells me is almost certainly sweet potatoes. Apparently, the two plants aren’t even related. The more I look at pictures, though, the more confused I am as to what they sell here. Seeing as we’re closer to Africa (yam country) than South America (land of the sweet potato).

Sweet potato. I think.

Picture nicked from the North Carolina Sweet Potato website, which has many excellent recipes and other sweet potato facts. Please don’t hurt me, ncsweetpotatoes.com.

I’ve never understood why candied yams are a side dish and not part of the dessert course. Where I hail from, those suckers are sweet. Also, they taste so much like pumpkin, it’s kind of redundant if you’re having pumpkin pie.

Oh, and somebody once told me the canned pumpkin pie filling in the States is almost always really butternut squash. So much disillusion.

Happy, happy! I have tomorrow off and I hope you do, too!

Happy Fourth, y’all!

We usually do something to observe the Fourth. Eat hamburgers and set fire to something. You know, like that.

I don’t think we’re doing anything this year, though. To be honest, this was always one of my least favorite holidays. I’m as patriotic as the next weasel, but it was always miserably hot every year and then the expected thing was to stand over a fire and cook food.

I hate hot.

Celebrate in my name, fellow Americans, and join me back here tomorrow 6WBT for Dead Pool Round 122.

I bought me a basket today

Passed this in a junk shop window today and, for £10, had to have it. Don’t know what I’m going to do with it, but it’s a beaut.

Strapped it to my bicycle to get it home and, yes, came the Elmira Gulch jokes immediately. I know too many people in the town.

Zo! One of the perks when your Queen is also your Pope: no separation of church and state. I get a four-day holiday at Easter! Tonight, I am a happy bunny!

Don’t worry, though — I’ll be around at the usual time to post pointless crap. Hoorah!

In case you missed it: commenter peacelovewoodstock pointed me to this:

In light of the devastating fire at the Notre Dame de Paris, Ubisoft wants to give all gamers the chance to experience the majesty and beauty of the cathedral through Assassin’s Creed Unity on PC.

From April 17th at 15:00 to April 25th at 08:00 (your local time), you can download Assassin’s Creed Unity on PC for free here, and you’ll own it forever in your Uplay games library.

We encourage all of you who want to help with the restoration and reconstruction of the Cathedral to join Ubisoft in donating.

I’m currently finishing up Assassin’s Creed: Origins (set in ancient Egypt). I’m a fan of the Assassin’s Creed series. The story telling isn’t brilliant, but the painstakingly-recreated historic environments are just wonderful.

Unity is set during the French Revolution. It came out in 2014 to so-so reviews (technical issues on launch, looks like), but it looks mighty purty. I got mine. Get yours!

Happy New Year!

The pig is for generosity and wealth. Have at it, pig!

It is also the time of the Steam Lunar New Year Sale. Looks like everything on my wishlist is at least 70% off. Somehow, I don’t think this is the path to prosperity, pig!

I have superhuman restraint and I limited myself to one: Assassin’s Creed Origins, a purty open world game set in ancient Egypt.

And now it has downloaded. Goodbye!

Happy New Year!

An homage to the great J.C. Leyendecker. Homage. That’s what we call out-and-out art theft, right?

You probably know Leyendecker better as the “Arrow Shirt Man” illustrator. But before Norman Rockwell, Leyendecker was THE Saturday Evening Post cover man. He was brilliant. Much beloved of painters for his technique painting hair (among other things).

Of course, me being me, I screwed up. I intended to find the Leyendecker cover from New Years a hundred years ago, but this is actually the 1909 one. Because math. Because, consarnit, I’ll see 2018 out as innumerate as I saw it in.

Happy New Year, everyone!

p.s. watch me get done for child porn.

Disconcerting Santa

Do you know why this Santa is disconcerting? Because he has teeth. You may not have registered it consciously, but Coca Cola Santa is as toothless as a chicken.

I guess the expectation was that old men would naturally be edentulous, but you’d think those sorry-ass elves could have made him a pair of George Washingtons or something.

Merry Christmas!

Wishing you and yours the merriest, because the uncouth Brits call it “happy Christmas” and everybody knows that’s just wrong.

It begins…

We have a holly tree in the back garden, but most years the birds have had alllll the berries before Christmas. Not this year, though — Uncle B. nipped out and got a little vaseful for my library (which I insist on pronouncing libr-r-r-r-r-y).

I’m declaring Christmas officially ON starting….NOW!

Those pale things in the upper left corner are my panties drying on the rack. Merry Christmas!

p.s. Happy Solstice — it just gets brighter from here!
