Backing into the news

Aw, Vlad and Barry don’t look like BFFs, do they? I love this picture. Lifted as is from this Telegraph article on the dress code for the G8. ‘Smart casual.’ Shit thee? I do not.

The news (including the punditry), still making me crazy mad at the moment. I avoid things that piss me off, especially if I’m helpless to do anything about them. But I don’t want to ignore news completely, lest something important sneak up behind me and smack me upside the head. So I basically go to all my old news sites and scan the headlines, but I don’t read the text unless it promises to offer me a crumb of comfort. A scintilla of schadenfreude. A fragment of fuck right off.

So, what about youse guys? Anyone want to share news-ignoring strategies, or perhaps links to some especially uplifting reads?

Picked up from the sidebar at Ace’s, this long but totally worth it article on ‘survivorship bias‘. I love an article that makes me look at reality from a different angle.

From Deborah in one of the chicken threads, this Flannery O’Connor longread on living with peacocks.

I love Flannery O’Connor. My family was very, very much in the louche Southern Gothic mold. So I thought I’d see what was available for Kindle. The complete short works for…£12? Fuck off, Amazon. Thenk yew.

Well, there’s this over at PJ Media. I have a lot of respect for J. Christian Adams, and in this article he lists all the ways the left lost on the recent Supreme Court ruling against Arizona’s voter ID law. It made me feel a bit better, especially since the on-the-face-of-it result of the ruling is that Arizona got creamed by the open borders crowd.

Okay, it’s not uplifting in the sense of a dirty hippie falling out of the old growth tree she’s been occupying, but it’s all I could think of on short notice.

I just feel a little queasy agreeing with Putin, that maybe we shouldn’t ‘arm the cannibals’.

I’m not a great Jonah Goldberg fan (he’s a good thinker, but his writing is often too cute by half), but this short piece is worth a read.

His thesis is that there’s nothing in the slightest progressive or modern about a big, bossy state. It’s just the same-old, same-old kings-versus-commoners system we’ve had since forever. The Founding Fathers and their Enlightenment approach to government is still the only revolutionary game in town.

I’m also avoiding taking too deep an interest in the news and just scanning a paragraph or two (really fast). I am beginning to think that all I really want from the internet now is cat videos and chicken blogposts.

This video is pretty good, though: It’s not about the nail

I think I’ve watched it 4 or 5 times. Still funny!

Sorry about the auto-play thing. Also, it will go right into playing the next video (so rude!).

I’ve been spending a lot of time on Imgur, and I hate myself for it. I’ve come to the conclusion it’s one of the dumbest places on the internet. Spending time in user submitted is just pissing minutes of my life out the window. 90% of the pictures are either shit or things that have been posted to Imgur a gazillion times before.

But I get such satisfaction from downrating the gay marriage and multi-culti threads and posting contrarian comments.

Never been to imgur. Don’t really know what it is. But … “one of the dumbest places on the internet” is quite a selling point! BRB.

I’m still reading large indigestable chunks. But I find myself reading more ‘feel-good’ and ‘fluff’ stuff. For some reason I’ve been drawn to the Daily Mail from the UK. They have lots of wacko stories and near nudie starlets to consume my lunch hour. (Explore.org to watch the Grizzlies is also a good use of News space)

I often read, reread, and then read again some James Mattis quotes.

I have mine saved, but here is a link to an article featuring some:

Some news is hilarious; During the Bush administration, Patriots owner Kraft claims Putin stole his superbowl ring. He showed Putin the ring, and the Russian mob boss/premier pocketed it and left.

The Disappointment and FAIL in that picture are palpable. Putin doesn’t mind making Barry look stupid, but he DOES at least like the perception that it isn’t a completely one sided battle….

I spend a ton of time on your Daily Mail website. I scan down and right click new tabs for hours. I love the obsession with all things American. I love how they hoover up every small-town shooting, every death-by-bowling-pin story. If all I read was the Mail Online, I would think you can’t go outside in the US without a ballistic vest!.

Oh and on Putin…I am conflicted. I’m sure he’s made of pure evil, but he sure see’s right through dipshit’s tough guy act, and it shows. Obama is just not used to dealing with a REAL thug. Kind of funny in a ‘go into the closet and hide in the fetal position’ kinda way.

Putin tries the same tough guy stupidity, he takes his shirt off and wrestles otters and silly crap like that trying to show he’s the toughest man alive. He has created a cult of personality about him in Russia, too. The big difference is that while Obama is really convinced he’s badass and important, Putin is genuinely scary. He’ll kill you for questioning him, and he doesn’t even care where you live or who you are.

I only read Ace and here and Zero Hedge, otherwise, it’s mostly tech stuff for me. If something big happens, I hear about it on Ace, then I look at news sites…that’s how I filter stuff.

I can’t stand the site or sound of Obumbles…I detest fakers.

Stoaty,

There was a gay christian girl who declared that her religious beliefs were more important to her than her sexual orientation, needless to say Imgurians were outraged and wasted no time in informing her that her decision was no good very bad and wrong. I think I was the only one who told her that I respected her right to choose her values and how she viewed herself.

And before you get alll choked up over Snowden … he’s still working for the CIA.
No breaking revelations on 9/11 insiders, who rigged WTC7 with explosives to fall, and the fact that Saudis just can’t fly planes … in fact, they can hardly ride camels.

Face it children – your country is the Terrorist!

We’re fucking arming al Qaeda???

Well…..Yes. We are arming them.

But you have to look at the entire picture, to completely understand.

We are simultaneously moving to disarm our own citizens.

And, as an added benefit, we are intending to continue to maintain an open border.

The only question left to answer is just when is our President intending to hang up his MISSION ACCOMPLISHED banner.

This reminds me of that time when a bunch of Russians refused to shake Obama’s hand. And that disinterested look on Medvedev’s face in that one picture when he shook hands with Obama. It seemed obvious to me that they were messing with him. My uneducated guess is that Putin is ignoring Obama here in order to gain some kind of psychological advantage. As Fred Thompson once said, “Russians don’t take a dump, son, without a plan.”

news avoidance and major time sink:

Sinfest.

That link takes you to the archives, and to strip #1 from Jan. 17, 2000. He’s still going strong. I go through a bunch of strips and then update my bookmark so the next time I go to the site I pick up where I left off. I hope at least a few of you enjoy Tatsuya Ishida as much as I do.

Uncle Al – I like it! I read several before I noticed he had a different blurb each time above his name (eg “strong enough for a man but made for a woman”, “Dude I Am Like So High”, etc), and had to start over. How long can he keep that up, I wonder?

Comment from Uncle Al

@AliceH – I ran across Ishida’s Sinfest maybe three years ago and I’m still making my way through the archive with my appreciation undiminished. I visit maybe once a week. The strip has all the major characters: God, Jesus, the Devil, Buddha, a dragon (as Shinto, I think), plus good minor characters representing us sinners. And they progress over time well, to boot.
