News.

I’m putting this on its own so it doesn’t get tangled up in my weasel nonsense.

There was a sometime commenter here with the username Lipstick who was a stalwart of the blog Innocent Bystanders. Geoff, also a Bystander, informs me that she has died. I don’t know the details and I didn’t like to ask.

Death in the social media age is a strange thing. People that we both do and don’t know, that we experience only as voices, go silent. Or, rather, they stop adding new content, but the internet remembers them forever. Forever unchanged. It’s a weird immortality.

There’s a tribute thread on Innocent Bystanders if you
remember her well enough to want to pay your respects.

It’s an odd thing this medium. I learned a long time ago that the fingers will say things the mouth never will, so you get insight into the inner thoughts of people you’ve never met. Then, poof. Gone. AcidMan, Neptunus Lex, Den Beste. I even have (had) a brother that OD’d and his FB page is just frozen in time. At some point, there will be more dead people on FB than living ones. Never interacted with Lipstick, but recall her commenting over at IB. Hope she’s found peace.

Thanks, geoff. Ugh. MS is a horrible beast.

Stoaty, this reminded me of Cranky – you remember him? He used to comment here occasionally.

He died unexpectedly about 10(?) years ago and left a WordPress blog running on auto-pilot.For months several of us posted “where are you” queries, as we were getting quite worried.

No one knew how to contact his next of kin. We finally got confirmation that he’d died (months earlier).

A number of us who “knew him” tried to get the blog frozen – as it was collecting huge numbers of spam comments in his last post – but WP wouldn’t let us do anything.

So far as I know, his blog is still running.

I do remember Cranky, McGoo. Thanks for the story.

For a long, long time after my mother died, searching her username (she loved the internet) would turn up pictures of her at a party.

I often think I should leave behind passwords and instructions, just in case.

It is indeed.

Eddiebear was heroic in tracking him down.

(yeah. I'm going to write)

(oooo! you have a website?)

Beware: more than one link in a comment is apt to earn you a trip to the spam filter, where you will remain -- cold, frightened and alone -- until I remember to clean the trap. But, hey, without Akismet, we'd be up to our asses in...well, ass porn, mostly.
