Sad stories
My first two chickens. The one on the right died at three and the one on the left lived to be eight and was never the same. Never made another friend, fed alone. Although, to be fair, she was always a little crazy.
Across the threshold this afternoon came this article from Backyard Chickens – “Do Poultry Mourn Over The Loss Of A Flock Mate?” It’s full of sad stories.
On second thought, don’t read it. It’s sad.
p.s. chickens are another thing that doesn’t work in black and white. You really need to see that red comb to figure out what the heck you’re looking at.

I made the mistake of pointing out to Mrs D that Mourning Doves and White Wings mate for life.
Because we inevitably have a couple singlets who show up during the day, alone,
They sit in the dust, or by themselves on the trees around the feed zone.
If you watch them you can see the mated pairs coming and going together, while these loners stay behind.
One of the several reasons I stopped my brief foray into the yearly Texas Dove hunt decades ago.

My dad used to do the annual dove hunt. Might’ve been Arizona, though.
Yes, I’m a terrible softie when it comes to animals. I’ve asked myself many times if I could raise chickens for meat. The answer is, I’d have to be very very hungry.

It’s why I won’t hunt till I have to.
The cost of a license, ammo, and so forth buys more meat than you’re going to get from your daily dove limit, and dove are like chicken wing appetizers, so you’re not doing it for the food.
Now wild hogs, ‘nother story. We’ve already had them tear up the pasture out in east Texas and once I plant, and fortify a garden area, I’ll probably be inclined to blast them.
No dove was ever going the threaten me. A good sized boar or sow is no joke and those buggers would eat ya if they had a mind to try.
Last year they killed an elderly woman and I’m not getting any younger!

It’s time for more pullets!
Americans are going nuts this year. People who never did it are trying to get their own eggs.
Biden’s chicken butt swabbers ordered the destruction of 200-million or so layers.
