Talk about something else for a freaking second

pomplamoose

My taste in music is…what’s the next stop after “eclectic”? Psychotic? Retarded?

Lots and lots of banjo music. Not all of it bluegrass. I have Chinese folk songs that sound like an alleycat with his balls clamped in a bench vise. I have klezmer. Played on the dobro. I own an album called Music to Strip By, which I bought for no other reason than I found it musically intriguing.

Point is, taking a music recommendation from me is often an exercise in x-treme suck.

But try it just this once. I’ve been listening to Pomplamoose lately, which is two kids shluffing around a shabby apartment in their pj’s making music. It’s fun to listen to, but it’s even more fun to watch — which you can do, thanks to their YouTube channel. They manage to put out a really rich sound, which they do almost entirely with conventional instruments. Surprisingly few electronics or post effects.

Watch for free, or download from their MySpace page (tracks are either a buck or free, though the free download thingie is junk). They’re also on iTunes, but I hate that shit — once you download the iTunes app, it stays resident forever.

Here — start with their cover of Beyonce’s All the Single Ladies and see if it’s not more fun to listen to than an cat with his balls in a vise.

Nataly Dawn has a good voice and a languid, bored delivery that…I dunno. It tickles me. But I suspect Jack Conte is the wizard.

You’re right. It was more fun than that.

You know using phrases like that to describe music might have caused young Damien some anxiety. Not to mention the music itself.

Wow, she dinnae look much like her voice. Sounds a lot like Emily Haines if Haines could sing below her pharynx.

She has an oddly enchanting voice. And you’re right: They get a surprisingly solid sound from the few instruments they use. Good arrangement.

Update: Oh, man, just found a sweet version of ” La Vie en Rose” on their website (audio only).

Whoa. My hitmeter has exploded with Google image searches of “michelle obama’s eyebrows.”

Hm. Maybe due to the Google image that got pulled?

You’re right…freaking genius! At last a version of that infernal Beyonce song that doesn’t make me want to throat punch her parents!

The “Favorite Things” cover was more Coltrane than Julie Andrews. I really enjoyed it.

Christ, what do I know? I like the new Miley Cyrus song, so I probably need neutering as a service to humanity.

And these two have a very laid-back Supreme Beings of Leisure vibe about them, which is cool (if they were any whiter it would need NASA-grade equipment to image them). But improving on the Beyoncé version isn’t hard. Glee blew it out of the water. (Do you get Glee in the UK? It’s as camp as a Boy Scout jamboree and I really, really like it.)

Oh, gosh, I loved this. In my case, though, it’s usually illustrations for kids books.

“Don’t make me sing this part/the lyrics are bad”

Pure, distilled essense of awesome.

Still getting hammered from Google Images search. The phrase getting the hits is “Michelle Obama monkey” — so people are definitely looking for that pulled image.

And, no, I didn’t compare Michelle Obama to a monkey. I made fun of her eyebrows, and two blogs in my blogroll have the word “monkey” in them. That’s all it takes for a Google hit.

I have to admit, I like the above-mentioned Beyonce vid for reasons that have nothing to do with music. Of course, I also love the Pussycat Dolls for similar reasons….. 😉

If you want slow and soulfull, Nora Jones is usually good. Of course, I will listen to just about anything except Death metal, Avant guard jazz and gangster rap….

(on that note, it must really piss off the rappers that Wierd Al Yankovik has proven to be a better rapper than some of the top black ‘artists’ around…)

Hahaha…to this day, nobody knows if I can dance. I can’t be persuaded to try unless I’m too drunk to walk.

My guess is, no. I can’t.

Thanks for the cool band link. Very good taste on this one, I agree. I really liked their rendition of Favorite Things from Sound of Music and Le Vie en Rose.

Humpty Dance? not so much 😛

Ain’t it great, jw? The guy is an evil genius.

There’s something about art that makes ordinary people go full retard. The kitteh man at the shelter, when he found out I was an illustrator, said, “Great! You could do some illustrations for us!”

Free, of course. I think I was supposed to get paid in the privilege of…shit, I dunno. People are weird. I don’t ask dentists to look at my teeth when I meet them socially.

You don’t? You must be the only one. It’s human nature, I think. I personally avoid having to decline invitations to provide free labor by being a thoroughly annoying, sarcastic asshole. Everyone who knows me knows that it’s just not worth the aggravation.

I may write a book.

I knew a urologist who was once invited to admire a funny spot on his father-in-law’s penis at a dinner party. But I do think some professions are more prone than others.

I believe that guy has written a book. He’s very, very funny — but in that socially embarrassing way I can only take in small doses.

Yeah, I was thinking he should do a book. And I agree, I had to stop after reading the first couple-dozen posts. But I’m bookmarking it, and going back in tomorrow. If I don’t make it back, call the President.

I write hardcore commercial software for a living (I mean, life or death, no-shit lotsa bucks riding on the sucker). So what do most people say when I tell them I’m a software engineer? “Oh, wow, can you help me install Vista on my laptop?” I’m a composer, not a fucking piano tuner. It’s very unlikely you can afford me.
