Google Lens correctly identified it
Our Jerusalem artichoke flowered! I thought sure it would stump Google Lens as it’s a perfectly ordinary looking yellow daisy, but its first solution was correct.
I have a metric shit ton of Jerusalem artichokes.
They don’t come from Jerusalem, of course. The name is probably derived from girasole, Italian for sunflower, and the artichoke part has to do with the flavor. (Somehow, WordPress has figured out I’m in England and has dinged me for not putting a u in flavor. Shoo, WordPress!).
Ooooo…Wikipedia says there’s soup!

I’ve never eaten them, but I’d be tempted to peel and slice thinly and fry 🙂 Like homemade potato chips. Or pan roast. Best: load up a box and set it next to the street with a sign. *FREE*
Lewis and Clark nearly starved to death because all they had to eat was meat, fowl, and fish. The Jerusalem artichoke probably kept them alive, and they could carry it with them.

The plant app is quite neat. I’ve discovered quite a few useful trees and plants growing on the east Texas property courtesy of the app. Like native persimmon and half a dozen tree species that make good wood for tool handles and other implements, that I shall pretend I’m going to use.
Boy, it didn’t lie about the post oak though, I have a nice rail fence cut and shaped using a chain saw courtesy of the post oak it identified. Damn that stuff is solid, and heavy!
