Speaking of…
I had a Tamagotchi once. His name was Baby Lars. He was yellow. I remember he began to cry in a movie theater once.
As I recall, if you neglected one long enough, it died and you had to hatch out another one. Which I did at least once, until I lost him completely. I found him again when I went to move out and I think he’d died for real by then.
Why did I, a grown woman, have a child’s toy? Because I never met an electronic doohickey I didn’t want to play with. And lose interest in after a vanishingly short time.
Anyway, the Tamagotchi turns 30 next year. Seems like an active culture, still. Oddly, that site doesn’t actually seem to sell Tamagotchi.
Amazon does. Looks like £15 for a classic and more for a themed one (like Star Wars, f’rexample).
Don’t even get me started on Neopets. Good weekend, all!

A fidget spinner from before there were fidget spinners? Or a pre-motherhood experience simulator? I remember when I was 11 or 12, we had divided health class in school. Facts of life kind of thing. All the girls were given an egg they had to carry around for a week, keep it unbroken, and have it checked daily at the school. After half of them failed the assignment, they got to watch an uncensored movie of a woman giving birth. Greatest abstinence / birth control motivation ever.

Ah, yes, pocket gadgetry/toys! For years my favorite was a 6″ slide rule. You can do a lot with a slide rule. NASA engineers used slide rules to send men to the moon, after all. Even after electronic pocket calculators appeared, the slide rule in the hands of an adept were quicker and more versatile. That eventually ended, and the calculator has long been king of the pocket, so to speak.
The only other pocket gadget that I hold in similar esteem, and even today I carry one always, is one of those big, fat Swiss Army knives, the ones with the little saw. Wonderful things, those are, simply wonderful.
For pure fidgety use, I carry a Krugerrand for tactile pleasure.
