Ukraine should probably not be a single nation, but rather East Ukraine with its significant number of ethnic Russians, and West Ukraine (including Kiev). Stalin’s Holodomor of 1932/33 starved to death millions of Ukrainians who were subsequently “replaced” by the Soviet despots with their own Russian commie hordes. As a result, the eastern part is more aligned with/sympathetic to Russia, while the western part looks, er, West.

Mojo has this exactly right… Any idiot except John Kerry and his boss would have done a very simple analysis:
1. Is Putin going to permit this to happen? (Think of trouble in the Ukraine as the equivalent of trouble in Minnesota. Nobody really cares but you have to do something). He -will- act.
2. Can the U.S. realistically do anything meaningful to stop it? How many troops would it take? How would they get there? What could they do when they did get there?

This kind of thing is why the U.N. exists: You go to the U.N. when you want to do nothing while appearing to do something. By the time the U.N. gets around to agreeing on anything, the problem takes care of itself.

You would THINK that the Dems would have this shit figured out, but nooooooo.

Umm, no, Ukraine is an independent country, recognized as such by Russia. The only reason there is trouble in Ukraine is that Putin is trying to dictate pro-Russian policy to Ukraine’s government.

Incidentally, there are now suggestions that Russian FSB agents have been working both sides of the conflict. Escalating it to this stage allows Russian invasion.
