She knows she’s beautiful

I hadn’t intended to buy chicks just yet, but I located a source nearby that had the right kind of girls, ready to go. So…!

I bought two mille fleur and a lavender (that’s the lavender). Mille fleur doesn’t look like much when they’re little, only after their first moult. They’re kind of a speckledy mess right now.

Those of long memory may recall that my bestest chicken ever was mille fleur (who, sadly, has joined the choir eternal), so this is a bit of a science experiment: seeing how much of Lucia’s personality was mille fleur personality.

There is something to this, you know. Different colors (and certainly different breeds) share personality characteristics. It’s uncontroversial in livestock circles; you get into trouble when you apply it to people. Except gingers.

Let’s hope it’s not too powerful a rule in chooks. I already have a lavender, too, and she’s a nasty-tempered little bitch.

These are younger than I’m used to, about four weeks (chicken lady is confident she’s got the sex right, but it’s tricky this young). It’s also earlier in the year and colder, so these peeping little shit-machines will be living in the house for the next month, at least.

I don’t mind a bit.

Yay, chicken glamour shots!

What’s Jack think of all these doings?

I’m glad you’ll let them live inside until it warms up. I read about a baby goat who had to have its front legs amputated due to frostbite. 🙁

Good for you, Stoaty! They’re exceptionally pretty chicks now. I hope the older ladies will welcome them with open wings when the time comes for them to join the sisterhood.

Oh ya, hot chicks!

How many chickens can you keep per brood box, approximately? I saw a house in Costco that only looked to have one brood box but was advertised for like a half dozen or so chickens. Seemed a bit cramped, especially if they all heard the music at once…

BTW, Stoaty, ya might ought to put a watermark or sig on your artsies. Just to drive a little site traffic and stuffs sales. I just ran across you’re Che: Bern fanboi pic on Calguns but no Weasel love was given.

I’ve always known that my cats would LOVE to have a live hamster or mouse to “play” with. I could never bring myself to buy one at the pet store, knowing what would happen. (And considering I’d have to clean up the blood from my carpet. But that’s not the primary reason; no, not at all.)

So, Stoaty, please do keep Jack and the chicks well separated.

Nope, not a bit. Grandma Marjorie had a chicken farm 🙂

Chicken Math. You started with four (I remember Mapp, Lucia, and Violet, but not the fourth). One was paralyzed by trauma. You added two, and I think three have died, but I can’t remember which ones did what. Now there’s three more. So there’s six? And yes—she is beautiful.

Thanks for pointing that out, Jasonius. I love seeing my stuff pop up elsewhere on the web.

It’s kind of a stupid vanity issue I have about crediting my stuff. Putting my URL on an illustration implies that I think it’s worth stealing, and I post an awful lot of shit.

Just wait until they’re fledged and discover the roof beams.
