I’m a steamroller, baby

steamroller

Not just one steamroller. I bet there were ten, at least. Great big things.

We stood and watched them pass and the earth — I swear — dipped under a couple of them, like a fat man moved across a wood floor. This is solid ground that has been passed over by these things dozens of times, and they still left tracks.

This was the last country show of our season. Weather was predicted to be rainy, so some of the exhibitors ducked out at the last minute. That’s kind of worrying, to be honest. When these events decline, even for perfectly explicable reasons, sometimes it causes a chain reaction of decline. Several of our favorite events have vanished in the last few years, and several more have shrunk.

Expecting a big blow tonight. Not Irma-sized, obviously, but chilly and miserable. We’ve had fires at night for a week. September, huh! Glad everyone from Florida is still with us…!

I’d gladly trade your chilly and miserable for our hot and miserable. 😉 The power is still out here and it’s hotter than hades. 🙁

So it would be wrong to say how nice the weather has been in Dallas.

No circus this year?

Was it the crowd turn-out that shrunk first? It is a bit sad when events such as this die off. It makes me wonder what will happen to these old skill sets. One would think the Gaia loving progressives would be drawn to these activities, since they want to live without modern conveniences.

I do love old equipment. There is a lovely museum up in Calumet, MI (Yooper territory to all you trolls) that shows all the old mining equipment they used to use. The most amazing thing is they have all of the original gear molds. Hand-carved wooden gears from tiny little things to monsters that were used to pull ore cars. They have hundreds and hundreds of them.

For anyone who’s interested, the Conservative Treehouse https://theconservativetreehouse.com has some good links on the current goings-on in Florida. Those folks need our help and prayers.

Been pretty dry in my section of the US upper Midwest for a number of weeks now. Lawn’s pretty dormant. The “big” rain today was about a tenth of a tenth of an inch from a remnant outer band of Irma. Didn’t even raise the humidity level much.

No chance they had a Ben-Hur style steam-roller race is there?

Even a re-written modern day weeny version where Messala doesn’t get squashed might have been entertaining (he should be left to be poisoned by his mistress, the steam roller mechanic’s daughter, when years later she figures out he doesn’t even like steam rollers).

Here is a nightmare story:

If you have the right to decline to speak to the cops, what right do they have to threaten you that if you do not appear and speak with them they will go to your place of employment and they will speak to you there? And the alleged crime? Criticizing islam. I fear for you stoaty & Uncle B.

You’re right, Ric Fan – it is very bad here. Not quite as bad as Sweden, Holland and Germany but very well on the way. We currently have a Director of Public Prosecutions (not sure what the US equivalent would be – but she decides, effectively, which cases get pursued through the courts) who would have fitted in perfectly in 1939. In Germany.

Something will give sooner or later, I am growing more sure of it with every day.

Hi Deborah HH – yes, we did go to the circus this year. It was a little sad, though. As Her Stoatliness said the other day about the way events seem to be dwindling year by year, so is attendance at the circus. While part of the appeal is the charmimg way it makes do with so few performers, it makes you wince when you see someone risking life and limb to entertain a bare handful of people.

Even worse, mind you, was the ghastly woman who had paid extra to sit right at the ringside with her two children and who then sat through the entire show tapping away at her phone, Bookfacing or Twattering or whatever it was she was doing.

Good job there was no knife-thrower this year. He’d have got a huge round of applause if he’d stuck one in her forehead, but it would have been the end of his career!

Uncle B.
Are you writing English village murder mysteries in your off hours?

Write a comment

(as if I cared)

(yeah. I'm going to write)

(oooo! you have a website?)

Beware: more than one link in a comment is apt to earn you a trip to the spam filter, where you will remain -- cold, frightened and alone -- until I remember to clean the trap. But, hey, without Akismet, we'd be up to our asses in...well, ass porn, mostly.
