Aiiii! Kill it with fire!!!

Steamboat Willie was released on this day in 1928.

At least, that’s what the V&A Museum of Childhood tells me. First Disney cartoon with fully synchronized sound, and first cartoon ever to have the soundtrack created after the cartoon.

The cartoon Mickey, I have to admit, was seriously cuter than this stuffed toy produced a few years later. What is it with old toys and seriously nightmare-inducing teeth?

Oh, I passed the stuffed rooster again today. It’s going for £74 and an odd number of cents. Not as eye-watering as some of those toys, but no thanks.

I never really liked Mickey Mouse as a kid. Or Donald. Or Goofy. Or any of the regular cast I suppose. On another matter I wonder how long Disney will keep getting congress to extend their copyrights.

Seriously nightmare-inducing teeth, plus those hideously deformed five-fingered hands.

Mickey Mouse: meh. He was OK as the Sorcerer’s Apprentice, though.

Me and my pals were Bugs Bunny fans.

Add me to the list of now-grown-up kids who never got the appeal of Mickey Mouse.

Give me a Flying Squirrel and a Moose any day!

Plus one for Bugs, Uncle Al. Wile E. Coyote, too. I identify strongly with him. Our best laid plans follow similar trajectories.

If we can multivote – Bugs (and his opponents) first AND Moose and Squirrel.

No votes for the various Yogis Booboos Quickdraws Snaggletooths, etc.

I saw more television cartoons than Disney cartoons, which were most often shown with Disney movies in theaters, so that is a big difference I think, in my preferences for television cartoons.

On top of that, the first funeral I ever attended was Snow White’s, and when those dwarfs knelt around her bier in the forest, I thought my little heart would break—and I’d never known “heart-break” before. It was quite traumatizing (even though the Prince came along and broke the spell). So I was very suspicious of anything Disney.

That looks like the first version of the “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie trailer. Aka “uncanny valley” meets “nightmare fuel”.

A very large part of Bugs’ appeal (as well as many other Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies characters) was the brilliance of Mel Blanc. He was a one-of-a-kind phenomenal voice actor.

I enjoyed lots of others, especially Rocky and B., but never warmed up to anything Hanna-Barbera did.

And then when as an adult I later saw that so many Saturday morning pseudo-animated shows had nothing but the stupid characters’ mouths twitching as they oozed left-collectivist indoctrination, I wanted to see the shows’ producers brought up on charges of child molestation.
