Positively the last coffeepost

Hand grinder. Positively the last bit of coffee equipment I’m going to buy (well, I’d like another big china cup, but that hardly counts). The blade-type grinder I’ve had forever does a mixed sort of grind, with some of the beans ground to powder and some big chunks.

A burr-type grinder, with two metal blades an adjustable width apart, will make all the grounds the same size, whatever you dial it to be.

So! Combining all the bits I’ve bought and the things I’ve learned and I made a cup of coffee and it was…very nice. I used the Monsoon Malabar that I roasted myself last week (the book says to give it five days to a week).

Nice enough to be worth it now and again, fiddly enough that I wouldn’t do it for every cup of coffee.

The truth of the matter is, though, what I really wanted to post about today were LAMBS! In the field next door! A month ahead of the usual time! But I didn’t get any good pictures.

Boo!

Have a good weekend, everyone.

Lambs? Lambs? Mint Jelly!

Sorry, couldn’t resist. Lambs are indeed wonderfully lovably cute and endearing. Also delicious.

I dunno, but something in the time-space continuum is outta whack. We have a big yellow object in the sky today and all the horses and cows are laying down.

Oh, be prepared to pay more for almond milk, etc. next year. The orchards were in full bloom when the Blizzard of ’23 hit. The bees are out today but the crop will be thin. Now we shall see how smart the Sand Hill Road VCs are…they have driven investors to plant tens of thousands of acres of almonds in the San Joaquin Valley…to the point where it is the largest crop in California.

JavaMan bought a conical burr grinder with his birthday gift card from JavaSon. It holds the beans, dispenses a preset amount of beans, then grinds them all at the touch of a button. Brand is OXO. It’s his favorite new toy, and he won’t let me touch the grinder. Fine by me. The coffee is consistent, which I appreciate (I’m kinda obsessive about precise measurements. I used to weigh the coffee beans—every time.) But I need to find of these small grinders so I can brew a small pot. 🙂

Not going to lie, it’s fiddly, Deborah. And talk about static electricity – if you thought stuff from a regular grinder stuck to your finger, you should see this.

Also, not cheap. But in the world of metal burr grinders, not expensive.

Yah. When I found one to buy, I decided that I could use our old grinder.

Re: Static electricity: It’s so dry here that I’m about ready to give up on my hair and cut it so short that I’ll need Brylcreem to style it. We endured a massive dust blizzard a few weeks ago, and we are still fighting the rusty red dust. My white Chihuahua goes out and comes back in wearing red knee socks. I try to wipe off her legs and I can see the dirt jump back on her fur because of the static electricity. The weatherman says we might get some rain today, but he’s broken my heart too many times.
