Yes, I believe they would
Have you switched (I won’t say upgraded) to Windows 11 yet? I’ve got two machines running it at work and I can’t see much difference.
The Notepad has multiple tabs now and doesn’t automatically close the file when you close the program. There’s that. I use Notepad a lot, so I noticed it right away.
But the main thing is they moved the Windows key – the one you click to open programs – from the left corner to the middle left. Doesn’t sound like much, does it?
But they didn’t leave the left corner empty. Oh, no. There they put a news aggregator. So however many times a day you go to open a program and poke that corner by force of habit, you get a faceful of Microsoft-approved headlines.
I learned pretty fast not to do that. Mainstream news! Brrrr.
Do I think Microsoft would make a whole ‘nother operating system just to try and steer everyone’s news consumption? Yes I do.
By the way, Windows 11 updates on exactly the same schedule as all my Windows 10 machines. I bet there aren’t many differences under the hood.

There’s a way to turn the news off in settings, go to Personalization > Taskbar and you can turn off things like task view and widgets. News is one of the widgets.

Is there a way to turn off WinDoze and regress to DOS 6.x?
WinDoze was intended to be a Graphical User Interface (GUI) as WinDoze 3.1 turned out to be. User could run Win 3.1 or MS-DOS.

Even though it’s been 20 years since support ended, I still mourn the passing of Windows NT Workstation 4.0. I’d still be using it today if it weren’t for the need to write my own device drivers (ack!). IMHO, Win NT was the only good version of Windows to make it out of Redmond (or whatever Circle of Hell the subsequent versions were spawned from).

Not a lot of differences in 11 from 10, just enough to be annoying and strange. My company is all in on Windows and Office and everything is online and cloud based, you’d think it would run better but it doesn’t work well. The alternative is who the hell knows. I work with a millennial who is a good dude but he just tut tuts my Gen X rantings about software and the world in general. I tell him to get off my lawn but first fix this for me please?

Hi!
We’re from Microsoft (or Google, or Apple, etc, etc, etc)
And we’re here to rearrange the contents of your kitchen cabinets, your dresser and your furniture!
If you’ll check your renters agreement you’ll see it says we can do this any time we like!
We’ve come up with some great new ideas!
We’ve decided socks need to be kept with pants in your drawers, and there are certain types of undergarments that for diversity equity and inclusivity purposes need to be disposed of.
We’re also checking to see if all the food in your fridge meets our standards as well.

Couches have been determined by our staff to be to bougie and prone to cause global climate change and subsequently we’re replacing them with used coffee bean bags made of ethically grown fibers.
All your cabinets have been removed and the various gadgets, dishes, pots and pans we deemed allowable will now be stored in recycled organic plastic corn silk baskets!
There are many other changes as well! All to make us happier and equaler!
Check it all out!

Switching to Linux pretty soon, been finding open source replacements for all my needed apps. Only stayed on Windows to be compatible with corporate clients but don’t seem to have any these days.

yeah, turned off the stupid news thingie. very annoying. if you pin enough apps to the task bar the windows box slides further over into the left corner, like a good little windows box. you can just move it there, but – meh

Thanks for telling me, Jon. I shall turn it off right away.
I figured out how to get that annoying colorful icon out of my system tray – the one that tells you it’s International Day of Hotdogs or some shit.
