It finally happened to me

wetphone

I thought it would never happen to me. I’m not one of those people who takes her phone to the loo and watches Gone with the Wind on the throne. I didn’t even remember the silly thing was in my pocket until I heard it >plonk< into the swirling waters of Flushing Stream.

It’s…okay. I peeled off the case and the seal and put the whole lot on the radiator for a few hours. Works okay. Looks kind of wonky.

The video is sort of de-interlaced and I have a spooky purple vignette around the edges of the screen, but only sometimes. I don’t know, is that residual moisture or actual damage? Doesn’t matter. I’m not due for a new phone yet and I’m kind of attached to this one.

Also, I just now tried to update my plugins so y’all can preview comments again, and the preview plugin broke the blog. I nuked the plugin from the control panel and it’s working again, but you still can’t preview. But I think you can edit! Will that do?

If this is the only line in my comment, editing is borken.

Oh, goodie.

Wednesday night is Limerick Night at my bath club (no, it isn’t bath as in bath tub, it’s bath as in beach club with cabañas and stuff). The membership is a lot of geezers. A few are late middle age, and Mrs. Uncle and I are youngsters at 63 and 68, respectively.

Driven to be topical and age-appropriate for the occasion and group, I composed the following offerings:

Cabaña / Cabana

The purists pronounce it cah-BAH-nya
Say it “wrong” and they’ll look down upon ya
But cuh-BAN-a’s OK
Whatever they say
We’re in Florida, not in España

Nantucket

There was an old man from Nantucket
With ear hair so long he could tuck it
Behind and around
from his nose to his crown
And he swore that he never would pluck it.

I always have a bad day the Monday after Daylight Savings Time change and today was no exception…always best to try and take that day off.

Hope your phone pulls through, they’re practically water-tight these days.

The Running Weasel works, that’s all that matters.

I still haven’t ploinked a phone, but Mrs. Pupster is the reason all y’alls replacement plans are so expensive. They don’t make a case sturdy enough to survive her use. A deadly combination of clumsiness, forgetfulness, and poor decision making (*cough-married me-cough*) has left a long broken line of smartphones with teh brain damage.

I smashed the glass on my phone a couple of times before I went to using screen protectors and I also use a case cover having learned that the hard way too. I have never splish-splashed a phone though.

I have had my electronic car key machine-washed (someone in our household got impatient but I am sworn to shut-up about it). Anyhow, in trying to avoid spending the $300 BMW wanted for a new one I learned about the “put it in rice” trick. It worked, but it took about two weeks. I would think that you could do the same thing or better with a package of desiccant and a big canning jar. Perhaps two – one at home and one at work. Just turn the ringer up and Bob your uncle’s calling!

Good luck and notice that all of us are being too mature to la-lau-laughhhhhh !

I have never dropped my phone into the water.

On its own.

I have, however, dropped myself into streams on a couple occasions whilst carrying a phone. Not really any better for them than a solo dunk.

I confess. I also have dropped a phone in the toilet. But it was a Windows phone so I chalked it up to a physical Freudian slip.

I almost dropped a handgun in a toilet once, on an airplane! One of those “oh holy shit that could have been really, really bad!” moments. (Authorized to carry on the plane, but still…)

I’ve had a bunch of those moments, in a wide variety of situations.

I try to learn from them, results have been a bit spotty.

The display issues are most likely the results of uric acid and fecal bacteria.

Remind me never to borrow your phone.

Anyone remember on-call pagers?
I always wished mine would end up in the drink, but alas.
I even went beer canoeing one time when the bottom of the canoe…hmmmm.
As a more seasoned adult I suddenly see I wouldn’t really have been much use that afternoon and I wonder why the pager didn’t stay home.
My 20/20 hindsight must finally be kicking in.

Down with the electronic leash!

@gebrauchshund—I try to learn from them, results have been a bit spotty. I hear ya.
Stoaty—I’ve never dunked my cell phone, but I’m a big fan of desiccants, in big pouches or tubs. I keep one in the laundry hamper, one under the kitchen sink, one in the closet, et cetera. If I did drop my phone in water, I’d cover it with a commercial desiccant until I could get it to a repair shop for professional drying and cleaning.

White rice is an excellent desiccant. Put some in a jar and keep your phone in it at night.

White rice works better in the salt shaker than dessicant chemicals, which make your food taste all wrong!

Sad news about Stephen Hawking. Have they tried leaving him in a bag of rice?
