Look up!

Best night of the Geminids meteor shower, the best meteor shower of the year. Except they happen in December when the weather is often pretty gross.

They happen from the 10th to the 20th, but they peak 13-14-15. Last year and next year, the peak will coincide with the full moon. But it’s a new moon in 2023.

It’s been cloudy so far this week. I haven’t dared go out and look up tonight. Wish me luck and have a good weekend!

Well! Sadly, it is overcast tonight, but the clouds must be thin. I can see one or two stars. I saw one clear meteor and a couple of times the clouds lit up like something bright was behind them (would that happen?). As I was only out there a couple of minutes, it’s probably worth trying again later.

Congratulations, Mme. Ermine! I wish I had the same good fortune, but I’m at sea level in Florida and the air is thick, not to mention it’s overcast, has been for a couple of days and will be for a couple more. *sigh*

I have fond memories of my late father keeping me up past my bedtime to try and catch sight some of his Birthday Meteors. His B’day was August 11, right at peak Perseid time.

It’s hard to complain about rain where I live, but overcast skies and rain for the past two days have ruined my sky-watching. It’s clear this evening, so maybe I will get the chance to look up.

Uncle Al—that’s a lovely memory.

Perseids are my favorites.

Mrs Fert, the Fertkids, and I sat out back many years ago to watch the Perseid extravaganza.

We sat outside for quite a while not seeing a thing. Then Mrs Fert had to go back inside. Of course while she was inside, there was quite a display in the sky.

Of course when she came back out there was nada.

But what amused us was while there was nothing of note when she was outside, each time she went back in the sky was filled with streaks. Had to have happened 10 or 12 times.
