The case for not throwing anything away, ever

The picture is the aftermath of a road accident. I’ll be honest – I thought those chimneys were coming out of the bus.

This is part of a collection of pictures of Coventry taken by Elizabeth Tyler. In 1963, when she was 17, both of her parents suddenly died. She moved into the YWCA and spent her days wandering the city taking pictures as a distraction.

Pictures by day, developed in a school darkroom by night.

Nothing too interesting at the link, but she moved all over Scandihoovia and I note the photos spent 20 years in Denmark, eight in Finland and 30 years in Sweden and she’s only just thought to dig them out and look at them.

As someone who has spent a lot of time pootling around archives, I have a plea: periodically have prints made of your favorite pictures and, for weasel’s sake, identify them on the back. Especially people.

(yeah. I'm going to write)

(oooo! you have a website?)

Beware: more than one link in a comment is apt to earn you a trip to the spam filter, where you will remain -- cold, frightened and alone -- until I remember to clean the trap. But, hey, without Akismet, we'd be up to our asses in...well, ass porn, mostly.
