The case for not throwing anything away, ever

The picture is the aftermath of a road accident. I’ll be honest – I thought those chimneys were coming out of the bus.

This is part of a collection of pictures of Coventry taken by Elizabeth Tyler. In 1963, when she was 17, both of her parents suddenly died. She moved into the YWCA and spent her days wandering the city taking pictures as a distraction.

Pictures by day, developed in a school darkroom by night.

Nothing too interesting at the link, but she moved all over Scandihoovia and I note the photos spent 20 years in Denmark, eight in Finland and 30 years in Sweden and she’s only just thought to dig them out and look at them.

As someone who has spent a lot of time pootling around archives, I have a plea: periodically have prints made of your favorite pictures and, for weasel’s sake, identify them on the back. Especially people.

Sweasy! Eva Marie Saint finally kicked the bucket at the ripe young age of 102. New dead pool, yippee.

When my father died and my brother and I had to clean out the house we found a box of black and white photos. By ‘box’ I mean one of the massive cardboard boxes with metal edge reinforcement that king size blankets came in – I think it was ‘North Star’ brand.

Anyway, hundreds of photos, some of them very cool and almost none were labelled. Given my parents ages there was no one else left alive who would have known any of these people – lots of early death on my mother’s side and they were almost exclusively her people. It really was very sad.

Spam used to be my nickname, before it was weasel. My first email address was spam@ – and then people started reporting spam to me!

I got an email wanting to teach me how to read maps backwards.

It was spam.

(Sorry. Old dad joke. I had to type it out or it would’ve sat in my head and festered into sepsis.)

(yeah. I'm going to write)

(oooo! you have a website?)

Beware: more than one link in a comment is apt to earn you a trip to the spam filter, where you will remain -- cold, frightened and alone -- until I remember to clean the trap. But, hey, without Akismet, we'd be up to our asses in...well, ass porn, mostly.
