Okay. At last, I’m in.

zbrush

ZBrush. Man, I’ve lusted after this program for years. It’s a 3D modeling package, but one aimed at people more accustomed to traditional modeling tools. Artards, in other words. Sadly, it’s like $800.

Naw, don’t worry, I’m not hitting you guys up for money. They offer a 45 day trial. The plan is, I download it, I make as many models as I can in 45 days, I upload them to TurboSquid (sort of like Zazzle for 3D models), and if that account ever reaches a high enough total to buy, I buy. If it never reaches $800, then I’m probably not all that good at it anyway.

So, here I go. I think I can remember a dim and distant time when learning new stuff was fun. Can you?

Oh, yeah. ExpressoBold takes the dick for René Angélil, Celine Dion’s husband. I hemmed and hawed about that pick, since I didn’t really know René Angélil from Adam. But then it occurred to me I don’t really know Celine Dion from Eve, so what’s the diff? Congrats, ExpressoBold — is that a second win? So, up Friday Dead Pool ROUND 80.

Autodesk — maker of 3D Studio — has continued to buy up its competition, including Maya. And now they’ve moved to the EGREGIOUS, HORRIBLE monthly subscription model. And — get this — it’s upwards of £1,000 a year to subscribe!

Does anyone doubt that’s where we’re headed with Windows 10?

Yup. If Microsoft does that I will defect straight to Apple – and I can’t even begin to think of an analogy for how unlikely that has always seemed.

Of course, if Apple does it, too then it will have to be Linux. I can’t pretend I am looking forward to either ‘adventure’.

I have nothing but admiration for people who can do artistic stuff. I stand in awe, and marvel.

Holy shit, they designed those fuggly Avatar blue guys using ZBrush.

Also, the cat has just curled ’round thrice and settled on my Wacom tablet, so I’m stuffed.

Oooo, I’m kinda digging the feral chick stoaty. She yours? If not, fake up something like it, maybe ditch the over-the-top silly firework strapped to the handguard & I’ll see about raiding the whisky fund.

Err, how much were we talkin here?

Apple will go subscription first. Microsoft will float the idea and everyone will freak, then a year or two later Apple will roll it out and all the Jobs nobbers (no offense to any Apple fans here, just keeping the bloodfeud spicy) will gush over how it is the only proper way to fund an OS.

What Stoaty & U-Badger said. This “Subscription Model” trend for Operating Systems is going to send me to Linux or one of the other Open-Source derivatives. I dread learning STILL ANOTHER script/language/OpSys (my near-63-yr old think-noodle ain’t so agile and limber anymore – and I became dog-tired of coding 20 years ago), but a number of friends have said that its worth the effort.

Oh c’mon. Celine Dion’s husband? That’s stretching “famous” to the breaking point. I’d go for Celine, but her faceless hubby?

McGoo, I finally cut the proprietary cord in 2007 and jumped to Gentoo Linux (admittedly when my brain was a spry 62), and I haven’t looked back. Except for an old XP box I had to scrounge for programming my ham radios (proprietary drivers, doncha know).

Most Linux distros these days are less than a half-hour to install and pretty maintenance-free. Hard drives are cheep, just swap one out to try it.

And if it’s cold enuf for a fur hat, why’s her boobs hanging out? And what is that abortion in place of the magazine?

I use Linux Mint, a nice ubuntu variant.

I keep hearing good things about Mint, Mojo. How hard was it to get working? Any pitfalls you’ve found?

Jasonius: nah, the artwork isn’t mine. It’s a standard advertising image for ZBrush. Actually, where ZBrush really shines is wrinkly, porous textures. Orcs and ents and shit.

Stoaty: throw up a PayPal link for a ‘Help me buy ZBrush’ donation pot. Bet you’ll get there quickly. ..pointy..

Unka: Smooth as silk, no problems at all. It even detected and configured the little USB network interface I use for setups. Very nice.

There’s another, called elementaryOS, looks a lot like the Mac desktop.

PS: if you’re a debian fan, Mint has a variant that uses that kernel as well.

Well, I heard on the radio that Canadian flags are going half-mast for the guy so that’s good enough for me.

I will go with Celine Dion’s husband as being valid. First, before now, when it was picked, no one challenged it. Second, from what I understand the reason that she stayed in Vegas instead of touring was to care for him. That level of dedication to spouse in show business is itself noteworthy.

Aw, McGoo and Poindexter, that’s sweet. The truth is, I need the external discipline of a goal and a deadline to kick my butt into gear.

Man, this ZBrush interface is a bitch.
