Huh. That’s kind of…huh.

emoji

It’s a modern Dutch building, where the gargoyles are emojis.

I’m torn on this one. On the one hand, modern architecture is so plain and dire and serious and determined to impose sick-making non-Euclidean silhouettes on the landscape.

On the other hand, emojis.

The firm that designed it is Attika Architekten. Hit the link for more pitchas.

A side benefit of Birthday Month is the week day posts show up an hour or two earlier. 🙂 <– only emoji I use

I'm not torn on this building. Those emojis are not timeless whimsy; they're self consciously trendy silliness that soon enough will be dated and hated by everyone. Also, get off my lawn.

Sigh. It can always be retrofitted with pretty bronzes of flowers or something. Leaves. Classic sun images. Hub caps.

My fantasy here is that the irritating architectural flourishes are disguised gun ports for building defense.

I dislike graphic mistreatment of the old ASCII emoticons so much that I even foil modern posting software’s attempts to turn the ASCII into those awful little stupid faces.

See? You just need to flip ’em over so they look the other way.

Uncle Al,
Right-side-up works too.

Uncle Al: “graphic mistreatment of the old ASCII emoticons”

EXACTLY! My [colon-hyphen-close-parenthesis] was turned into a picture and I resent it. I was okay with it being turned into weasel-crafted up-twinkles, not this. Guess I won’t be using my only emoticon anymore. [colon-hyphen-open-parenthesis]

I do love the disguised gun-ports idea so very very much.

They should replace the emojis with some nice Sheela-Na-Gigs. Wait….are there nice sheela-na-gigs???

@AliceH – I have yet to have one of my reversed ASCII emoticons abused into a graphic. You may want to turn your old standard into open-paren, hyphen, colon for a smile, or close-paren, hyphen, colon for a frown.

The worst thing with automatic smiley encoding is when software engineers like me are trying to share code with each other over a chat. Colons and brackets tend to be kinda important. It’s why we use things like Slack rather than Skype.

Dutch artist Joep Van Lieshout designed this one:

On a sad note, Bob Owens died this morning from a self inflicted GSW. Bob wrote Bearing Arms. He was an exceptional writer. He had a wife and children and was only 46 y/o. More proof that no one really knows anyone else. We are all strangers. Whether in real life or on the tubes. RIP, Bob. This is quite a lost.

hrumphf – You lot would have said the same thing about the first gargoyles.

Plus you have to have projectile weapons in order to give any purpose to ‘gun ports’.
The same people who actually have, and use, the guns will no doubt solve the emoji problem when they level the building while screaming “Aloha Snackbar!”

I have to agree with those above — I had a lot of use for ASCII emoticons, which were clever and fun. Emojis not only miss the joke but ruin it for everyone else.

chuckle, that building looks like a collection of Amazon delivery boxes stacked on one another. It will be gone in an architectural eye blink.
And really no loss to man kind 😕

And here I thought we Irish-German crossbreeds had a kinda flaky sense of humor…

Clearly, some Dutchies have got us beat right out –
