While we’re tearing down statues

juan

And Juan is on the left side of the door at the bulk spice company. Pretty sure this would be a hate crime in the US of A at the moment. It probably would be a hate crime here, if we had any Mexican presence at all.

If a statue promotes bigotry and no-one is offended, did it make a stereotype?

Carl wins the dick(™) with Bruce Forsyth, a man who holds the Guiness record(™) for the longest-running television career for a male.

NB: this is Carl’s sixth or seventh win. Do not fuck with Carl.

Too late for this week; come back next Friday for Dead Pool Round…who the hell knows. Rick Rostrom (whose records are better than mine) says it’s not really #100, it’s #97. Because I not math at good.

Have a great weekend, all!

Blame it on a time machine accident. That’s what we do at Ace’s place.

I’m a right harbinger of death. I’ve lost count of the number of wins. My wife has got a few as well.

The key is to see what the family of an elderly celebrity say after a major health scare. If they announce that the person is doing very well then that is a clear indication that their demise is imminent.

Cheers!

Many more statues will be trampled down for our own good and protection.
In due time there will be only a statue of Venus of Willendorf nursing Karl Marx and Michael Obama, with Anne Frank looking on dejectedly.

Karla Marx. Don’t forget the transitionally gendered. (Not sure if the People’s Committee on Approved Art will keep his beard or not.)

I cannot get the destruction of Chinese history by Mao’s cultural revolution out of my mind. Every time I think I’ve shaken it, the Taliban’s destruction of other culture’s historical monuments jumps in to take its place.. I never thought I would see it in the United States.

I have understood from Election Day that the Democrats and the Republicans would combine to try to destroy the outsider, Trump. It happened to Jimmy Carter, so it was to be expected. However I am shaken by the viciousness of the demonization. I have tried to get my friends to explain what they think Trump has to do with Nazi’s and racism, but I only get obscenity and rage. I am disturbed by the seriousness of the threats of impeachment – I ask them what law Trump has broken , and they babble something about the Russians. I ask them if an elected president should be removed from office by force just because the side that lost doesn’t like his ideas….and they say “YES!”

I frankly fear for the republic. Attempts to remove Trump will not be taken quietly I suspect, and violence on a major scale will ensue.

Mao incited the Red Guards to abolish the past by annihilating the “Four Olds”: Old Customs, Old Culture, Old Habits, and Old Ideas. The resulting destruction wiped out nearly all of China’s antiquities; a significant fraction of humanity’s heritage of art.

The Taliban and ISIS attacked anything “idolatrous”, including relics of other religions and “excessively decorated” mosques. They followed precedent set by Wahhabi Saudi Arabia, which demolished “idolatrous” Moslem shrines around Mecca and Medina, such as the tombs of Mohammed’s companions.

The present wave of puritanical vandals are most like the Moslem fanatics, seeking to prove superior virtue by taking offense as easily as possible. (The original Puritans were given to similar impulses; Cromwell’s troops destroyed stained-glass church windows all over England.)

The Nazis and Jacobins did a lot of historical revision as well. So yeah. I can get how an individual of good faith might want to see a statue of a confederate general removed from a city center type area, but the movement as a whole is definitely making me nervous.

(I already often refer to SJWs as Jacobins anyway. The never-ending purity tests that are increasingly difficult, leading to devouring their own, looks exactly like the aftermath of the French revolution.)

Speaking of hate crimes, your penultimate sentence is one. It reinforces the misogynist stereotype that wimmings is not gud at brain stuff.

Obviously Badger made you type it with his Male Gaze. Now you need to bring him a sammich.

Henry VIII and Cromwell weren’t so hot on the old historical preservation either.

Mexican food qua Mexican food is pretty rank. Tends to be greasy and too heavy on the beans. It’s peasant food, and not in a good way. Tex-Mex is streets ahead. Funnily enough some of the best I ever had was in Bradford. Owner was from Albuquerque, chef from Guadalajara.

My favorite Mexican restaurant food – and perfect margaritas – was in Edinburgh. Yep. Scotland. I was in a state of shock until meeting the owners. Yep. They were Texans.

Much of the furor of statues here in the U.S. is rationalized by declaring the depictees slave owners or slavery supporters. Whenever possible, point out to the leftist antihistorians that Mohammed owned slaves and institutionalized slavery into the civil structure of Islam where it still exists and is practiced to this day. They should be tearing down mosques.

You, too, can be an apoplexy generator!

Will need new sunglasses at that point.

It always amazes me that after raiding all those religious houses and even selling off the stones of the churches, Henry was broke before he died.

Most of these clowns will tell you the civil war was fought against England, or maybe Germany.

Should surprise no-one that any and every statue of someone with a horse and a sword has to be a Confederate.

“Dumber than dirt” is the way I’ve been describing most New Orleanians for decades. They continue to live in a climate fit only for roaches, frogs, and alligators (and nowadays I think the frogs are defecting), refuse to fix the streets or build needed bridges across the river, and willingly sit outdoors in this heat to pull apart slimy mudbugs for tiny slivers of meat. God help ’em.

Apparently the vandals in this case were too stupid to realize who Jeanne d’Arc was, and figured, “It’s a statue, so it’s Teh Evil!!!”

I’m inclined to think Gregory will be better remembered for his hunger strikes than for his comedy. When Bill Cosby was starting, he was compared to Gregory, but Cosby denied that, saying Gregory was a political comedian, and he, Cosby, wasn’t.

The partial eclipse in 1984: I was living right near a park in the suburbs, and my windows looked right out at the greenery. My then-cat, Arizona the part-Maine Coon, loved to sit in the windows in the morning. Well, along comes the darkness, the silence of the birds, the whole shebang . . . and Arizona freaked! He ran squeaking from one living room window to the other, looking frantically at me, as if to say, “Hey! You’re in charge of this — make it stop!”

I wonder if my two current furry thugs will notice.
