This came today

brushrest

I ordered this from Amazon and it came today. It’s from China. It’s very nice and rather large. It’s a brush rest, carved to this shape (presumably laser-carved, because they’re all alike) from a hunk of rosewood tree root. It cost me less than five pounds and the shipping was free.

There is so much wrong with the thing I just typed, from the cost of the item to the free shipping to the fact that rosewood is more protected on the international market than baby fucking harp seals and shouldn’t have sailed through Customs without a bureaucratic fight to the death.

Are you guys getting this? Super cheap, excellent stuff from China with free (you have to assume, hugely government subsidized) shipping? Because we are. It takes two to five weeks to get here, but I mean…really?

I just checked the wiki and there are wood products sold as ‘rosewood’ that aren’t rosewood. You have to know Latin to know which is endangered and which is not.

But sounds like a good deal. I’m guessing it isn’t very large.

It’s small, so it probably fits in the dead space in a shipping container already on its way over.

I have been getting small things from China via Amazon that have sold for a few dollars and which were shipped for free. As in your case, they took about two weeks or so, but arrived just as promised. I had thought of them as small companies trying to build a market on Amazon by getting good ratings from early customers. I figured that they were willing to under price and absorb the shippings costs in order to build to a reasonable number of 4 Star (or so) ratings.

I believe this to be the case as some things I bought a year or so ago have doubled or tripled in price – say from $5 to $14.99.

One minor annoyance is that they will set their promised delivery date out say two or three months (even though actual delivery may take two weeks), so that Amazon can’t ping them for late delivery.

I used to buy tons of cheap widgets from China on eBay, always with the free shipping, but I think Canada Customs is blocking it now cuz the last widget took 6 months to get here…things seem to just sit in a warehouse in Canada, judging by the tracking.

Shipping is just plain cheap.

I see made-in-Europe cookies and pasta for sale at the same prices as US-made. Also produce from South America.

Just don’t order any clothes from China. Their sizing translation sucks. I’m a 6’ tall woman. China apparently doesn’t have any 6’ tall women. They have only 4’ tall women who weigh 50#. I know this because an XXXXL China size fits a 4’ tall woman who weighs 50#.

When I was a kid, my friend from next door and I used to buy all sorts of kung-fu related items from ads in magazines from Hong Kong dirt cheap. And no problem with shoe sizes as we’d send a tracing of a foot and they’d match it up to the nearest size. We also bought all sorts of weaponry. It was like Christmas whenever a package arrived. It still amazes me what stuff got through customs and the fact that it was kids buying it.

Now I find all sorts of cool stuff for cheap on Ali Baba and such but give it a pass since I already have enough crap as it is. 😉

I bought my husband a CD of video game music (a Japanese game, Xenogears) from Japan last year. Cheaper than buying it from an American company, and he got a cool shipping envelope with Japanese characters on it. They did predict it would arrive well after Christmas, but it got here just in time to stuff his stocking.

Which reminds me I need to write to West Coast Shaving to see where my shipment of Clubman Special Reserve Aftershave/Cologne is!

I’ve ordered a ton of clothes from China, ArmyBrat, and I’m near as tall as you are. I just had to order men’s clothes 😉

Sadly, shipping from most places to the UK is no longer cheap. I used to order things like vitamins from my good old US supplier because everything was so much cheaper, but the shipping shot through the roof a couple of years ago.

I just bought some replacement earpads for my garden knockabout Koss headphones. From China they cost just pennies and arrived in two weeks. The Koss originals were several pounds for a couple of bits of foam. My guess is they come from the same factory!
