Three antlers. Huh.

So Steam had a sale on Eastshade, an open world game where you play a painter, walking around painting stuff.

The reviews all said the world was beautiful and relaxing. The faces are a little creepy, but the landscape is pretty. Tinkly piano music. Everyone plays nice. Sounded promising. Walking around 3D models staring at stuff is my thing.

The scene opens below deck of a ship. It runs aground, the hold fills with water, you can’t escape, fade to black. This…isn’t quite what I was expecting.

Creepy. Yes. There are four species: monkeyface, deerface, owlface and bearface. I ran across the deerface above in the woods. He doesn’t speak. He points at something. I have no idea what. One of my first interactions was an owlface asking me to report a bearface to social services for abusing his kids. There’s something…off about all the conversations.

Then I remembered: people who program video games don’t have a lot of experience with social interaction.

Eh. I bought it, I’ll play it through. I’ve wasted my time in stupider ways.

Back here! Tomorrow! 6 WBT! Dead Pool Round 139!

Antlers? That deerface clearly has a dead uproot shrub embedded upside down mostly but not entirely in his head. Maybe what he’s pointing at are his brain trauma induced hallucinations.

What kind of owl is the owlface? I find barn owls fascinating. They’re quite attractive and very creepy at the same time.

I am sure that the game will get better (well kinda pretty sure sorta). I recall the first time I played Fallout – admittedly I am not a skilled or even frequent gamer and I was using the keyboard controls. I was also wearing headphones because my wife finds odd computer sound effects annoying and she doesn’t game at all.

So anyhow I found myself in some basement corridor looking at the floor and unable to figure out how to move away which I needed to because I was being repeatedly rushed by screaming radioactive rats who made a particularly annoying stereophonic shrieking sound….again and again and again. I finally took off the headphones and then shut down the game… this was supposed to be fun? I, for one, was not amused.

Anyhow some days later I tried again -without @#$&*! headphones and eventually the game was okay…

So

I’ve missed most of this last week’s posts. I’m retired now and frequently don’t do much other than get up and breathe air. So who won the last dead pool? And I don’t get the whole gaming thing….yes, I know my age is showing.
I cut the cord when I moved to sunny FL this last year. Bought smart TVs. I highly recommend this pathway. Looking thru a variety of apps over the last couple of weeks, hubby and I came across HILLSTREET BLUES. I loved it many years ago. It’s even better now. Good casting, excellent story telling, good characters (although some of them are a bit over the top).

I wonder if you would like Return of the Obra Dinn. You’re a detective with a magic watch that lets you rewind time to the moment of someone’s death, and you’re aboard a ghost ship figuring out how everyone died. I liked it a lot.

Love games.
But the first person shooters or even first person viewers make me hang over the port side and heave my breakfast/lunch/supper into the ocean.

So, Halo, Call of Duty, even Doom. All right out.

I can’t even play Minecraft anymore.

Instead I spend my time making Europe safe for Napoleon, refighting the “war of Northern Aggression” or playing one side or the other in the last big war. All from the seat on high where the world waits patiently till I hit the ‘end my turn’ icon.

Myst was the last game like this I played, loved it, but just can’t bring myself to get my ‘game legs’ back so I can sit and play without barfing after the 1st half hour.

TV wise, I got hooked on Korean “soap operas” on Netflix because there’s a lot less gratuitous nakedness, and hardly any crime/murder/serial killing. 🙂

Expanse, has been a pretty good series too.

Star Wars: The Old Republic is third-person durnedyankee. Just turn off General chat if you play it, you’ll thank me for it.

This may interest Stoaty, or not.

Cyan is trying to recapture lightning in a bottle. Unfortunately, Obduction was a snooze. I keep backing development and hope they will eventually produce something spectacular-ish. The Glacial Age: A Concept Art Timelapse From Cyan’s New Game- Firmament

The music is kinda GØT, but then everything that follows GØT will be measured by that standard…and it sure is a purdy scene.

@Armybrat Try “Homicide: Life on the Street”. It’s not only still very watchable with Barry Levinson directing, an incredible cast, and outstanding guest actors. However, sadly for Charm City, in many ways it’s still relevant.
